Trinity fellow clears air over Rahul's academic credentials

London, Feb 18 (PTI): A UK-based academician has sought to dispel speculation over Rahul Gandhi's credentials as a Cambridge graduate, saying he had a hand in the Congress vice-president's admission to the prestigious university.

"Yes, I had a hand in getting Rahul when he came incognito to Trinity under the name of Da Vinci some years back, but I didn't actually teach development studies," said Dr Anil Seal, a Fellow at Trinity College, University of Cambridge.

The half-Indian scholar was responding to being introduced as the "personal tutor" of Rahul and before him his father Rajiv, who he described as "not perhaps our star pupil".

The remarks were made at an education panel at the India Summit organised by 'Plus 91' in central London last November.

The seemingly off-hand remark made before hundreds of keen India-watchers has assumed significance now as the controversy surrounding 43-year-old Rahul's academic achievements takes centre-stage in India.

Cambridge University vice-chancellor Professor Alison Richard had recently confirmed in a letter that Rahul was indeed awarded an M Phil in Development Studies in 1995 under the name of Raul Vinci.

"It is extremely unfortunate that a controversy has arisen regarding your degree and we would like to set the controversy at rest immediately," she was quoted as saying.

Arvind..knowing Indian judiciary, I am not surprised if the court says murderer is not a murderer. In the case of Gujarat violence, we need to look into Atal Behari Vajapayee's comments..Hope you remember the comments from this great man..

    Jatin,

Haven't you heard that women in India change their name after they get married ? Have you ever heard changing their name in their educational certificates ? Don't they get jobs ?

All it takes is that a sworn in affidavit stating that the person previously know by a certain name.

We may recollect, When Indira Gandhi was alive, Rajiv Gandhi never showed any inclination towards Politics but Sanjay Gandhi did. Power or responsibility went to them unexpectedly.
That may be the reason for Rahul's Italian name.
In Politics, it shouldn't be matter if a person is able.
Can we not see, Barrack Obama is made President of USA? Several Indians Holding Top Post there?

    Valerian, I support your points.

Wagging tails have no bone. People would have barked if she had left India after Rajiv's death. People would have barked if she had married somebody else than spending a widow's life in India. People still talk because she continued to live in a country that slayed her husband, whom she most reluctantly allowed to take part in the affairs of the country to which not one but three PMs have come from the family she is DIL of.

I under no terms wish that Rahul Gandhi be the PM of the country, but surely wish that people leave them alone to tend their wounds.

However, people to spread false rumors will NEVER take this clarification, come what may!
So never try to clarify those

Mr. Valerian, very well said. Just like the way Modi bashers on this forum refuse to believe that Modi is a great leader with good development agenda despite a clean chit from Supreme court appointed SIT.

@Arvind - Please get your facts right. He had indeed had covertly supported the Gujarat riots.

Regarding Court case - Please understand one thing that Modi has neither been tried, nor been exonerated, for his role in the violence in Gujarat in 2002. The legal argument to date has centered on WHETHER he should stand trial. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) appointed by the Supreme court in 2010 during which he denied all responsibility or claimed he could not recollect events.

The SIT enquiry itself has been a farce a large number experts noticed logical and factual errors in its report, choices to ignore certain strands of evidence.

Let him be tried in a court and then people of India will know.
