Gigantic tricolour on tallest flagpole flutters proudly in Delhi

New Delhi, March 7 (IANS): Drawing glances from all passers-by, a mammoth tricolour measuring 60 by 90 feet and weighing 35 kg, was Saturday hoisted to a dizzy height of 207 feet and fluttered proudly at Central Park in Delhi's commercial hub Connaught Place.

MP and Flag Foundation of India president Naveen Jindal, who is behind the initiative, said it was the "largest flag in the country and highest flagpole in Delhi".

The organisation has so far installed 45 monumental flag poles in 15 states since 2009. Of the total flag poles, 12 measure 207 feet (including Delhi) while the other 33 are 100-feet tall.

"It is an initiative to inspire Indians to take pride in displaying the national flag and instill a sense of nationalism and patriotism among the citizens of the country," said Jindal whose efforts resulted in the Supreme Court's judgment permitting Indian citizens to hoist the national flag.

"Connaught Place is an iconic area and the Central Park its landmark and the flagpole apart from adding colour to the skyline will become a future tourist attraction," he added.

The flag was made from knitted polyester fabric in Mumbai while the chakra has been painted by a specialized printing process.
