DMK condemns centre, Sri Lanka over fishermen arrests

Chennai, March 20 (IANS): DMK president M. Karunanidhi Thursday condemned Sri Lanka for arresting Indian fishermen as well as the Indian government for remaining silent on the issue.

Citing the arrest of 75 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Wednesday by Sri Lanka, Karunanidhi said in a statement here: "A doubt is arising whether Sri Lanka is trying to cheat the Indian government, Tamil Nadu government and the Indian fishermen by trying to show interest in solving the problem."

He said the arrests took place at a time when talks are on between Indian and Sri Lankan fishermen over fishing rights in the Palk Strait.

He said the arrests could not have taken place without the sanction of the Sri Lankan government.
