Fire walking a child's game for this robot!

New York, March 30 (IANS): Wait for humanoid robots that can walk through fire may soon be over.

The researchers at the US Naval Research Laboratory have built Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot (SAFFiR) for Navy ships.

Developed in collaboration with researchers from the Virginia Tech and University of Pennsylvania, the robot has built-in sensors that allow it to see through smoke.

In a recent demonstration, the team of researchers steered the robot to an open flame without any damage.

They also showed an artificial muscle that would help the robot lift equipment, walk with a fire hose and activate a nozzle.

Navy researchers have also developed a lightweight resin that can be moulded to any shape and resist temperatures up to 500 degrees celsius, said a report in Discovery News.
