Australian jailed for racial attack on Indians

Sydney, April 1 (IANS): A court in Australia has sentenced a man to three years in jail for racially motivated attacks on two Indian nationals.

The Townsville District Court in Queensland state Monday heard that Brian Lou Douglas Lawton and another man approached a 26-year-old Indian man in Ayr town in October 2012, demanding that he hand over money.

When the Indian said he did not have any, Lawton punched and kicked him, ABC News reported Tuesday.

The court heard that the victim's 29-year-old housemate, who was also an Indian, was attacked by Lawton with an iron bar later that night, leaving him with broken teeth.

The court heard that Lawton was yelling phrases like "get out of my country".

The 29-year-old told the court that he suffered from low self-esteem after the attack.

Lawton, who was charged with attempted robbery and assault, will not be eligible for parole until April 30 next year.
