Thailand to hold new general elections July 20

Bangkok, April 30 (IANS): The Thai caretaker government Wednesday agreed with the Election Commission (EC) to hold new general elections July 20.

The agreement was reached during talks between the government and EC at the Royal Thai Air Force Academy, Xinhua reported.

The government agreed with all EC proposals during the meeting, EC Chairman Supachai Somcharoen said.

The EC will meet next Tuesday to draft a royal decree on the new election date, which will then be issued by the government.

The EC has consulted with the parties concerned regarding the election date since the Constitutional Court nullified in March the Feb 2 general elections, saying it was not held on a single day as the constitution stipulated.
