Mumbai, Jun 27: A concert to mark late music director Madan Mohan's birth anniversary on Sunday evening became a treat for Mumbaikars.

The notes of his 1961 song with its perfect blend of different instruments and pitch transported the audience instantly to another era, one of melody, lyricism and pure music.

The occasion was the 82nd birth anniversary of music genius Madan Mohan, the maestro known for his deep understanding of both the Indian and Western classical genres.

It was only fitting that the Bharat Ratna nightingale was the chief guest, especially since it is in Lata Mangeshkar's voice that you get to hear some his immortal works.

"Madan Mohan was a great music director. I think I'm very lucky to have gotten to sing for him," said Mangeshkar.

Swar Brahma award

Lata's brother and music director Pt Hridyanath Mangeshkar was given the Swar Brahma award in Madan Mohan's memory.

"He was my elder brother and that I got to give my youngest brother this award with my hands makes it special," said Lata Mangeshkar.

The audience begged for more as Kavita Krishnamurthy, Suresh Wadkar and Sadhana Sargam performed Madan Mohan's songs in a concert that followed.

"It's a great honour but I was also tense considering how well composed his works are. Also one is always aware that one is singing Lata Mangeshkar's songs," said Krishnamurthy.

"I worship Madan Mohan for his understanding of classical music," said Wadkar.

A fitting tribute indeed for a legend of Hindi film music!
