Lok Sabha election ends, India awaits verdict

New Delhi, May 12 (IANS): India's most bitterly fought national election ended Monday evening, with some 60 percent of the 66 million electorate in three states voting in the 10th and last leg of a contest widely tipped to end a decade of Congress rule.

The Election Commission said the balloting ended in Uttar Pradesh (18 seats), West Bengal (17) and Bihar (six), marking the culmination of over five weeks of electoral process during which more than 500 million voters came out to elect a new 545-member Lok Sabha.

Most interest nationally on the final day of polling Monday was on Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh where BJP veteran Narendra Modi, who will be the new prime minister if the BJP-led NDA coalition wins, was a candidate, his might challenged by AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and the Congress.

Barring stray clashes and allegations of voter intimidation in parts of West Bengal, Monday's voting too passed off peacefully in a tribute to the world's largest democracy.

As in the past, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said it was confident of forming the next government.

"We will cross the half-way mark of 272" (in the Lok Sabha), party spokesman Prakash Javadekar told IANS. "And there will be a government led by Narendra Modi."

Exit polls are expected within an hour, while the actual counting of the millions of votes polled across the country will take place Friday.

Monday saw a key index of the Bombay Stock Exchange closing at an all-time high, just before exit polls started pouring in, gaining over 550 points or nearly 2.5 percent intra-day.

Even as voting started, serpentine queues of men and women voters were seen at most of the 71,254 polling centres in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar as well as West Bengal.

The turnout was so heavy in Varanasi that some voters complained that they had been standing in the queue for as long as four hours.

More than 50 percent of the electorate had voted within the first six hours of polling that began at 7 a.m. Balloting continued right up to the time the polling centres closed in the evening.

In Varanasi, Aam Aadmi Party's Kejriwal, a former Delhi chief minister, claimed he was sure to defeat Modi. "The situation has changed in the last three days, and now everyone is saying Modi is losing."

Kejriwal insisted that the Varanasi battle was no more a triangular contest. "(Congress candidate) Ajai Rai does not feature anywhere. I feel it is a direct fight with Modi."

The BJP is equally confident of ensuring Modi's win by a huge margin in Varanasi, the second Lok Sabha seat from where the Gujarat chief minister is contesting besides Vadodara in his home state.

Modi Monday urged the electorate to vote in large numbers. His appeal, telecast by television news channels, triggered an immediate protest from the AAP which called it a violation of the model code of conduct.

Ajay Rai courted controversy when he walked into a polling station with the party symbol tucked on his kurta -- a violation of electoral laws.

Officials reported brisk polling in the other 17 constituencies of Uttar Pradesh too, including Azamgarh where Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav is considered the front-runner.

In Bihar, almost 55 percent of the electorate had voted by 4 p.m.

Additional Chief Electoral Officer R. Lakshmanan said voting was peaceful despite fears of violence. The six constituencies where polling took place were Valmiki Nagar, West Champaran, East Champaran, Vaishali, Gopalganj and Siwan.

The highest polling of nearly 70 percent was reported till 3 p.m. from West Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress is battling the Congress, the Left and a resurgent BJP in 17 Lok Sabha seats.

The opposition accused the Trinamool of unleashing violence to intimidate voters. They claimed that a number of their polling agents were driven out of booths. The Trinamool denied the allegations.

Some 20 people were injured in clashes between CPI-M and Trinamool activists in Haroa, about 40 km from Kolkata.

Uttar Pradesh accounted for most candidates in the final round (328) followed by West Bengal (188) and Bihar (90). Uttar Pradesh has 31 million voters, West Bengal 25 million and Bihar about 9 million.

The drawn out Lok Sabha contest that began April 7 was one of the most bitterly fought in India, with political discourse repeatedly degenerating into vicious personal attacks.

Now that the Lok Sabha elections are over and the nation awaits the results with bated breath, many are expecting the BJP to form the next government at the centre. Presumably, a large number of electorate from the minorities has also voted the BJP with the hope that the party would now focus more on nation-building, rather than on promoting Hindutva. Let’s hope the party will succeed to remain in power through its entire tenure by concentrating on national interests.

At last this blame game tournament has ended. We have been used to this scenario since independence. Initially, we blamed the outsiders for the state of affairs in this Country then we started blaming the ruling parties and now the parties blame each others to make us happy. In the midst of all this we forget what the winning party had promised to us before this election as we shall be busy listening to the losing party blaming the government for everything. We shall never learn from our past.

The election in the world's biggest democracy passed off peacefully. Then why it is termed as "most bitterly fought". Is it just because Modi was in center stage throughout or is it because anti congress wave was rampant? Rather it is a well fought election. Though all exit polls say majority to NDA I am still not 100% sure until the result comes. It is true that Modi has campaigned extensively through his Rallies, tweets, road shows etc but the actual winning depends on the extent to which grass root workers reached the mass especially rural mass. Rural mass still constitutes the largest vote bank in India. If the party workers slept on the Modi wave without doing their job at root level then magic number cannot be ensured. (Remember the mistake in "India Shining" campaign earlier in 2009). Hope a stable Govt comes with full majority without the need for power greedy small parties grouping together for another kichdy Govt.

AAP, the 'BJP B team' will be proved spoiler of Congress votes on 16th May. Congress will lose 60-80 seats nationwide due to AAP.

AAP themselves will not win, also they restrict Congress winning!

FEKU might form Govt, but after lot of circus as NDA will not gain majority.

Sh Prem, moodbidri, its quite obvious that you're so engrossed in dynasty politics that u dont know situations around you...AAP will not win more than 5 seats nationally (2-3 in Delhi & 1 in Haryana / Punjab) They can come second placed only in around 10 seats (including Kejriwala) So how could they upset Congress in 60 seats??!! Hilarious! Anyways lets see for ourselves how much power does AAP have to come across as B team of dongi Congress!

    @ anantu,
even if AAP will not win single LS seat nationwide, if they able to attract 40-50 thousand votes in around 60 constituencies, it is a loss for Congress only not for BJP.

Understand one thing, majority of LS seat's winning margin is 30,000 to 50,0000 votes & AAP will pull these crucial votes in 60-70 seats. That's the simple calculation (I didn't say, AAP will spoil Congress votes & they will win those seats)

Sh Prem, moodbidri, AAP will not win 50,000 votes in more than 20 constituencies & they can come 2nd in about 10...Rest deposit loss & face loss 'Mukha Bhanga', nothing else. The AAP bubble fizzled out long time ago!!

Dear Prem, There is another theory. If you have seen what happened in Delhi assembly elections you will notice this. There was anti congress feeling already and congress was sure to get wiped off. Had AAP not there, BJP was sure to come to power with majority due to anti Dixith wave. But AAP came in between and spoiled the chances of BJP. They plan to do the same thing at National Level now. So if AAP grabs some votes, it is likely to effect the chances of BJP rather than Congress which was already destined to loose. However, at National level there could be other factors like minority vote splits, modi wave etc etc which may play in other directions. We cannot conclude anything concretely until actual results are announced.

Here are several reasons behind the spectacular performance of the BJP. First, Narendra Modi crafted a political message which was both credible and attractive. The Congress had nothing positive to offer except venom and poison. Second, the BJP worked to a strategy. Amit Shah was dispatched to UP well before the General Election. He toured the state, analysed the geographic and social factors right down to the booth level, collected the information and came up trumps. The use of all modern technology to propel the BJP forward to victory is one great takeaway from this election. No other party invested so heavily in election databases, GIS Analysis etc.

While Rahul Gandhi was busy concentrating on maintenance of the EVM machines ,proved in Amethi on vote day.

The election was turned bitter because Congress started attacking Modi personally to cover their lapses (read corruption and inflation). Indirectly this helped Modi. From "Modi-who", he became "Modi-all". Just one year back BJP was in a disarray.
Congress should shun its' negative politics /arrogance now and concentrate to be a responsible opposition to keep the government in check without being obstructive.
Another interesting aspect of this election is that even though initially it was thought that AAP will sway anti-congress votes and dent BJP's chances, actually it swayed Muslim votes who were disgruntled with SP/Congress and dented SP/Congress chances.

Well done India. Universally three factors are well known about Indian elections.

First our elections are peaceful, and election campaign is 'Live Entertainment', besides candidates trying to woo voters by various ploys and tricks.

Secondly the election history clearly indicates the people's verdict has been in favor of India, and India's democracy.

Third the most important factor is, regardless of bitter disappointments, the looser always have accepted the voters verdict in a dignified manner, and waited for the next elections...

The Election commission should be commended for conducting the election in a fair manner.
