Udupi, May 26: “Society is revering only power and assets. Increased greed is the reason for all the bad incidents. We should build an open human society which will be free of greed and honour promptness and truthfulness,” said former Lokayukta Santhosh Hegde.
He was speaking after inaugurating the building as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of Mahadevi High School in Kaup.
“Democracy means by the people, for the people, of the people, and the government has to function according to this. But today, the government is run by a few, for a few, of a few. Elected MPs, instead of serving the people, act like they are the masters. The officers who come under the executive are steeped in corruption," he said.
He added, "In the judiciary, we need to wait for several years to get justice. The media, which is supposed to expose the truth of the administration, is now paid news. How can we expect good society from these? Though good health is our right, people who go to a government hospital will never return fully recovered. Is this not the contribution of the people who have led the corrupt to win the election with a huge margin? Unless we change, society will not change.”
Answering the questions posed by the students, Hegde said, “As per the report released by the Swiss banks, there is $ 1,456 million in black money. With the help of online transfers, the money deposited in foreign banks can be transferred to another bank. So, it is difficult to get the black money to India.”
He also said that the Juvenile Justice Act should be amended.
“Criminals who have committed serious crimes are escaping punishment. Respected judges will decide whether to provide relaxation in crimes after studying the seriousness of the individual case,” he suggested.
“Kejriwal's refusal to furnish bail is not right. No one should go against the court. The accused should respect the order and act according to it,” admonished Hegde.
