Puttur, Jul 10: Despite a bundh call given by Sri Ram Sene protesting the failure of police in nabbing the accused Sattar in Akshata murder case, situation remained peaceful in the area and normal life was not-so affected on Monday July 10.
As reported earlier Sri Ram Sene had given a call for taluk bundh on Monday. But the BJP leaders had clearly distanced themselves from the bundh call. They even had announced that they would not extend their support to the bundh.
This move by BJP indeed had its effect on the bundh. Though a few buses did not ply and shops were closed in the early hours of morning, schools and colleges did not declare holiday. Some shops were opened later in the day by afternoon while KSRTC buses continued their regular service.
Additional police force had been summoned to the town which looked after the security arrangements for the day. Though miscreants felled trees and laid them across the Mangalore-Puttur road at Kovettila, police cleared the way within no time.
Security arrangements were made under the guidance of 2 DySPs, 4 inspectors, 6 sub inspectors. Along with them, a total of 10 ASIs, 25 head constables, 100 constables, 3 platoons of Reserve Police and 4 KSRP teams too were deployed on duty.
The only visible impact of the bundh was felt on the famous weekly Monday market of the town. The ever-crowded market, which is also one of the busiest markets of the district, was looking pale with hardly any sellers and buyers. While most of the sellers did not turn up following the bundh call, only a few traders from Hassan, Chikmagalur and other distant places were seen in the market square.
In a way bundh was not successful and did not serve the purpose. But the pro-bundh people may take heart in the fact that at least some business concerns and auto rickshaw drivers supported them and participated in the bundh.
