Bangalore, Jun 4: Residents of Mandur, who have been agitating against the dumping of Bangalore’s garbage, will have to live with the problem at least for another 6 to 7 months till the alternative sanctioned private waste management projects start functioning.
The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will continue to dump the city’s garbage in Mandur for another 6 to 7 months or till the end of the year anyway.
Karnataka’s Transport Minister B Ramalinga Reddy, who Is also the Bangalore in-charge minister, said a few private firms have commenced work for setting up of plants for scientifically dispose 2700 tonnes of waste generated in the city.
Scientifically managed garbage disposal plants would come up on the outskirts of the City and they would generate electricity by recycling waste.
BBMP was also setting up bio-methanisation plants of five tonnes each in 16 locations for disposal of waste generated in the City.
Meanwhile, BBMP has decided to identify less habitant places in Doddaballapur, Ramangaram, Chickballapur, Kolar and Tumkur for dumping of waste generated in the City.
Plots spread around 200 to 300 acres would be identified in neighbouring districts, the minister said.
Stating that laxity on the part of the officials would not be tolerated in clearing the garbage, Reddy said all divisional joint commissioners have been made responsible for timely disposal of waste.
Five officials, who posted on deputation and shown lack of interest in BBMP works, have been sent back to their respective parent departments.
A medical officer and two assistant executive engineers have been suspended for delay in the disposal of waste, Reddy said.
The BBMP spent nearly Rs 400 crore a year for waste management.
To crackdown the private mafia, the corporation has been instructed not to hire private operators to lift the garbage during middle of the day and this would save the BBMP nearly Rs 100 crore a year.
Most of the contractors produce bills without lifting the waste, he said.
Answering questions from reporters, the minister said the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has to take a final decision on bifurcation of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).
He said the Congress in its poll manifesto has promised bifurcation of the city corporation for administrative convenience.
Owing to its vast geographical coverage, it was difficult for the BBMP alone to handle all civic issues of the City, he said.
