Panaji, Jul 13: Goa government on Wednesday admitted that the shortage of manpower has affected the work of restoring age-old birth and death certificates in the state which are in bad condition.

"The process of restoration of thousands of books of birth and deaths along with other records in archives is a continous process which will go on for considerable long time as their condition at the time of receipt is found to be extremely worse," stated minister for archives, archeology an museum Ramkrishna Dhavlikar.

Replying to a question on the floor of the house, the minister also cited shortage of hands to carry on the restoration work.

Dhavlikar said that definite time limit cannot be given because the process of restoration of records is time consuming process as it involves several scientific treatments such as testing of PH value of the paper, deacidification, fugitivity of the ink used, tissue paper repair etc.

He said that the restoration work largely depends upon the availability of LZ imported tissue paper which is supplied only through New Delhi-based National Archives of India which proves it in piecemeal process.
