East Ukraine clashes must end this week: Poroshenko

London, June 9 (IANS): Ukraine's newly elected President Petro Poroshenko has said that the ongoing violence in the eastern regions of the country should end by this week, media reported Monday.

"We must end the fighting this week. For me, every day in which people die, every day in which Ukraine pays such a high price, is unacceptable," BBC quoted Poroshenko as saying in a statement published on his official website Sunday.

"And to do that, we must restore the Ukrainian border so that the safety of each Ukrainian citizen is guaranteed."

Poroshenko's statement came after a meeting with Mikhail Zurabov, who is the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) special envoy and Russian ambassador to Ukraine.

Poroshenko in the statement also suggested holding daily meetings in order to understand the developments towards ending the crisis.

The tensions still continue in Sloviansk and Donetsk.

The 48-year-old confectionery tycoon was sworn-in Saturday as the fifth post-Soviet president of Ukraine after winning a majority in the May 25 election.
