Mangalore, Jun 15: A engineering student, native of Kerala, drowned in River Netravati at Innoli in Pavoor village near Konaje here on Saturday June 14. He has been identified as Saurabh (20), native of  Kozhikode Kannur.

Saurabh, a first year engineering student of Srinivas College at Valachchil near here, had ventured into the river in the company of his friends, Nebis, Vishnu, and Audro, at around 4 pm on Saturday at Valashalu Nadugudde in Innoli for taking bath.

Saurabh, who was not conversant with the conditions in the river, reportedly reached the spot where the river is very deep. He did not emerge from the river thereafter, and the frantic search launched by his friends proved  futile. The  youngsters  then shouted for help, after  which North Indian labourers  working in a nearby sand mining site rushed to their rescue.

After a search extending to two hours, the body of Saurabh, which had been found  deposited deep into the slushy surface at the spot, was brought out. Post mortem was thereafter conducted at a hospital in Deralakatte.
