Kolkata homeguard shot dead trying to prevent domestic violence

Kolkata, June 28 (IANS): A Kolkata police home guard was shot dead Saturday with his own service weapon after he tried to intervene in a domestic fight and prevent a man from beating up his wife, police said.

The incident happened in the early hours of Saturday in Haridevpur in the city when Raju Gwala was shot by Ashok Das. He later succumbed to his injuries in a hospital.

"Gwala and a constable were patrolling the area when they saw Das beating his wife. He immediately rushed to spot and tried to pacify Das.

"But Das snatched Gwala's service revolver and shot him in the chest. He subsequently succumbed to his injuries," Deputy Commissioner of Police Rashid Munir Khan said.

A case of murder has been lodged against Das who was hospitalised after being thrashed by locals following the incident.

Khan also said that Gwala's wife would be offered a job besides monetary compensation.
