OIC, Arab League call for Ramadan ceasefire in Syria

Jeddah, June 30 (IANS/WAM): The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League have called for a ceasefire in Syria during the holy month of Ramadan.

Iyad Ameen Madani, the secretary-general of the OIC, and Nabil Al Arabi, the secretary-general of the Arab League, made a joint appeal urging all parties to the conflict in Syria to commit to a full ceasefire and put a halt to all acts and forms of violence and fighting on the occasion of Ramadan.

"The aim of this appeal is to stop the bloodshed of the Syrian people, to alleviate their harsh suffering and to allow relief organisations access to perform their duties and deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to devastated areas in all Syrian territories," a statement issued by the OIC said.

Iyad Madani and Al Arabi called upon all influential regional and international parties and powers concerned with the Syrian crisis to support this joint appeal and to join efforts to urge the Syrian government and all parties to the conflict to commit to the declaration of truce and full ceasefire and halt all military operations.
