Trinamool MP's rape remark: Congress walks out of Bengal assembly

Kolkata, July 1 (IANS): The Congress Tuesday walked out of the West Bengal assembly demanding action against Trinamool MP Tapas Paul over his rape remark.

"He (Paul) says he roams around with a gun and will shoot down people, the government should have initiated suo motu case and arrested him for saying such things," Congress Legislature Party leader Mohammad Sohrab said.

"His remarks have shamed entire Bengal, so we demanded a statement from the chief minister stating her stand on the issue. We wanted to know what the government is doing, but that was not allowed. So in protest, we walked out of the assembly," said Sohrab.

Paul, who represents Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency in Nadia district, has been caught on tape threatening to gun down CPI-M men and let loose his "boys" to rape their women. His remarks have been widely condemned.

The Congress also demanded Paul's immediate arrest.

The Communist Party of India-Marxist led Left Front too has demanded action against Paul.

"While making the remarks, Paul has repeatedly asserted he was saying this as a Trinamool worker. Yet the government has not taken any action. The government should have suo motu initiated action against him," Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra said.

"Despite courts repeatedly pulling it up, this government refuses to learn its lessons," added Mishra.
