Mangalore: Meet regarding malaria held at DC's office

Mangalore, July 8: Expressing dissatisfaction over the MCC's performance for not collecting the reports on malaria from various hospitals, Deputy Commissioner A B Ibrahim asked MCC Commissioner to collect the reports on malaria within 15 days and to organize a meet  to mitigate malaria taking everyone into consideration.

Ibrahim was addressing a meet at the DC's office here on Tuesday July 8.


Dr Shrinivas Kakkilya said, "Malaria has spread beyond the city; medical officers has failed to mitigate the problem. Malaria has increased over a period of time and deaths are being reported due to the disease. Hospitals are providing reports to the NGO's, but the officers have failed to collect the report from hospitals. People who come from abroad are also at a risk of being infected; this should prevented. The malaria control action committee should take action to prevent and stop the menace from spreading.

Activist Suresh Shetty said, "Meetings are being organised from the past several years but MCC officers and the health department have failed in preventing the disease from spreading. Malaria cases are increasing instead of reducing. Construction sites form the main source centers for the disease."

H S Shivakumar, district health officer said, "In the month of May, when health officers, Asha activists and Anganavadi workers visited 3,16,042 houses in the district and found 28,840 larvae. Similarly in June, of 2,20,915 houses visited, larvae was found in 20,970 houses.

Dr Shrinivas Kakkilya questioned Manjayya Shetty, "What are the criteria to select the MPW?" He also said that Manjayya has given in writing that he does not know anything about it. Kakkilya said that he could also take legal action against it.

Kakkilaya also suggested about meeting construction workers, source reduction has to be done and added that the administration should write to the government asking for providing insecticides.

The DC also asked MCC commissioner if the site owners deny to take smear of labour take action on them.

Revathi, MPW who visits the fields on educating people about malaria said, "We work from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. We can complete 50 houses per day. If find any places where mosquitoes are breeding, we will inform to owners and ask them to clean it." 
 
ZP CEO Tulasi Maddineni, district medical officer Dr Rajeshwari Devi,  malaria district control officer Dr Arun Kumar and MCC commissioner Ajith Kumar Hegde were present.
