Mangalore, Aug 3: A procession organized on Thursday evening by some Hindu organizations, from Nantur to Maroli-Kaikamba, took a ugly turn when they were refused permission to proceed to Kulshekar. The Police refused to allow them to go further.

Many among the processionists were seen stopping the hardliners from blocking the road. The traffic was blocked on the Mangalore-Karkala highway for a long time. The police were attacked by some processionists blocking the road. At this stage, the police resorted to mild caning.

The procession is said to have been organized in retaliation for a procession and demonstration held by a minority community last Tuesday.

The protesters, about 1000 in strength, then started pelting stones at a few vehicles, said to belong to a minority community, parked at the Maroli-Kaikamba junction. This is said to have forced the police to resort to mild caning to disperse the crowds. Later, a bus was also damaged by stone-throwing by the protesters.

Superintendent of police B Dayananda and Additional SP Lokesh Kumar personally supervised the police arrangements.

Further details are awaited and will be published on this website.
