Udupi, Aug 4: Despite the orders issued by district administration to allow the ore-laden lorries to ply on the district roads to unload ore at NMPT, some individuals and organizations  pelted stones at lorries on Thursday August 3 night.

As reported earlier in these columns, the ore-laden lorries which were stranded on National Highway from Shiroor to Bhatkal were allowed to ply on district roads as one time concession to download ore which they had already brought from Bellary.  The decision was taken at a meeting of lorry owners, various organizations.  The meeting was attended by district in-charge minister Dr V S Acharya.

Accordingly the lorries had started plying on the national highway.  However, some individuals and organizations tried to obstruct the trucks from Kolalagiri Bridge to Santhekatte near Kallianpur.  People pelted stones and threw fireballs at lorries.

Though adequate security measures were made by the police, miscreants managed to pelt stones while hiding in the dark. Miscreants however fled even before police or public could arrest them.  A few lorries were damaged owing to stone pelting.

Nevertheless, ore-laden lorries managed to reach New Mangalore Port by crossing the district border by 3 am on Friday.
