Udupi: CITU, AITUC demand immediate payment of DA

Udupi, Jul 18: Udupi district Beedi workers Federation (CITU) and Udupi Taluk Beedi Labour Union (AITUC) jointly staged a protest in front of Bharath Beedi works in the city on Thursday July 17. They demanded for the immediate payment of  Dearness Allowances to the beedi workers.

The beedi workers staged several protests earlier regarding the increment in wages and Dearness Allowances, which went in vain. The government had ordered the beedi companies to pay Rs 21.15 per 1,000 beedis which was not imposed.


"There are more than 6 lac beedi workers in Dakshina Kannada who are facing acute financial problems. The government gave false promises to the people saying that they would control price of necessary commodities," said Mahabala vadera Hobali, vice-president.

Sitaram Berinje, CITU secretary, Shekhar, Karunakaran, treasurer, K Laxman, secretary, Shashikala (AITUC), Shanta Nayak, president, CITU secretary J Balakrishna Shetty and others were present.
