Modi pays homage to Mandela on his birth anniversary

New Delhi, July 18 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi Friday paid homage to former South African president Nelson Mandela on his birth anniversary, saying it was an occasion to reaffirm commitment to work towards world peace.

"The beloved Madiba's work, ideals and principles continue to inspire us. He demonstrated the triumph of peace, equality and service," Modi said.

The UN General Assembly had in November 2009 declared July 18 as "Nelson Mandela International Day" in recognition of the former South African president's contribution to the culture of peace and freedom.

Mandela was born July 18, 1918 and died Dec 5, 2013.
