Mangalore, Jul 20: “Body and mind of a person are inseparable. If both are treated with equal priority then it leads to the complete treatment,” said Fr Patrick Rodrigues, the director of Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

He was addressing the gathering after inaugurating the ‘Muller PsyCon 2014’, a Continuing Medical Education on ‘Psychosomatic Medicine’ organized by the department of Psychiatry, Father Muller Medical College at the Decennial Hall in the premises of the college on Sunday July 20.

He said, “From ancient days humans discovered that the two entities mind and the body work complementary to each other. If one is affected, then it will affect the functioning of the other."

He said that the Psychosomatic department had turned into a sub-speciality department.

"It is an area where there should be an interaction between a physician, a psychiatrist and a social worker along with specialists of many other departments. The effective interaction of all the above specialists will lead to the healing of the patient,” he added.

He also said that it was important to consider the patient's faith on God.

"If two patients of the same disease are treated with the same medicine the person with faith will be not only able to bear the pain but will respond to the medication in a speedy rate,” he added.

He wished that the CME would be a first step for many more CME’s to serve the society in a better way.

Administrator of Father Muller Medical College, Fr Rudolf D’sa released the souvenir of the CME.

Fr Richard Coelho, FMMCH administrator, Dr JP Alva, the dean of of Father Muller Medical College, HOD of the Psychiatry Department Dr Denzil Pinto were present.

Many doctors and psychiatrists from various medical colleges and hospitals across the country are participating in the CME and sharing their views on Psychosomatic Medicine.

Psychosomatic Medicine is a branch of Psychiatry that deals with the understanding and advancement of medical science, education and provision of health care for persons with comorbrid psychiatric and general medicine conditions.
