Tea from Indian brands contain pesticides: Study

New Delhi, Aug 12 (NDTV): If you're someone who treasures your steaming hot cup of tea and uses it to unwind, relax and pace your thoughts, then you might be in for a real shocker!

On Monday, the Food and Agriculture team of Greenpeace India, a non-profit organisation that has been dealing with environmental issues since 2001 released a rather worrisome report that talks about the current situation of the tea industry in India.

Between June 2013 and May 2014, the team tested 49 different packaged teas from eight of the top 11 companies that not only dominate the branded tea market in India but also export to countries like Russia, Britain, the US, the UAE and Iran.

Here's a short summary of the report:

46 of the 49 samples contained residues of at least one pesticide.
29 of the samples tested positive for a cocktail of toxic pesticides.
A total of 34 pesticides were found across different brands.
DDT (known for its insecticidal properties) was present in almost 67 percent of the tea samples even though it is no longer registered for use in agriculture in India and was banned in 1989.
Neha Saigal, a senior campaigner for Greenpeace India said that, "Indian tea is a national pride and it should not be linked to toxic chemicals with serious environmental and health risks. All stakeholders in the tea industry should come forward and take steps to safeguard the reputation of our national drink."

What Does the Tea Board of India Say

The Tea Board of India was quick to respond and refuted these allegations stating that the tea being offered by the listed Indian brands is 'totally safe' and meet high standards. They also claimed that they would work to dispel any misconceptions about Indian tea in the eyes of the Indian consumer.

The Tea Board of India later said in a statement: "Having reviewed the findings of the Greenpeace study, we can confirm that all the samples tested comply with Indian laws and regulations that have been designed to protect consumers. Indian teas are well regarded world over, are totally safe and follow stringent standards."

They added, "The Indian tea industry led by the Tea Board of India has been constantly taking steps to make tea cultivation even more sustainable and reduce reliance on synthetic plant protection products to ensure that Indian tea continues to meet the high standards that consumers expect."

The steps include the launch of an initiative that will have certified at least 50 million kg of tea by December 2014 and the development of a "plant protection code" to aid best practice in tea cultivation.

The Tea Board of India concluded by saying that it was open to collaborating with all stakeholders to help make tea production more sustainable in the long run.

If this study is true, tea will loose its market international and no one will use tea in India too.Better the tea planters correct their attitude and stop using pesticides to maintain tea hygiene and fit to consumption.

Keep patriotism and health of your body away from each other. Some have cried it is an 'international conspiracy'. On what basis ? Food adulteration is very common in India. There is no regulation on how much and what kind of pesticides can be used on crops. DDT is banned only on paper. The tea report by Green Peace was quite obvious because tea is one commodity which you consume after being exposed directly to pesticides, unlike fruits and vegetables. No wonder they found ample amounts of pesticides in it.

If a Indian says Indian politicians are corrupt, everyone applauds him. If a foreigner says the same, then the same people will accuse him of conspiracy.

Not surprising. Cross contamination in agricultural products is common. The report does not say how much pesticide was present. Which agricultural product is free of any pesticide? Even the best of honey contains . No one adds any pesticide deliberately into agricultural products. What is important is how much of which pesticide.

Now, it is a slip between the cup and the lip. Since the tests were conducted by Greenpeace India and widely published in all papers, the results may be genuine. We have pesticides in vegetables. Steroids are injected to some vegetables, poultry for faster and bigger growth. Even milk for children is not spared, since cows are injected steroids for more yield. Artificial milk from chemicals is made. During Diwali, people get sick not due to overeating, but due to chemicals in mawa and preparations by adulterated articles. UPA or BJP have nothing to do, this is the brainchild of our business men.

This study Report doesnt surprise me.because a few years back I myself experienced it as I brought tea powder from India from a famous brand. It was meant for "Export"It contained when I made tea some other material was found like either peffer or some Papaya seeds powder. In agriculture nowadays everywhere pesticide are used, while production ,it remains also in powder, leaf .Thats the reason why mostly Indian products are prohibited to European countrys.even in fish from Asian countries are banned when one finds pesticide. There is no Need of extra pesticide to spray. It is there enough in our water that is flown from farms or elsewhere to see or from earth.some manure to plantation that contains pesticide which doesnt allow that manure to spoil.list is high.very sad in our daily tea also we have to consume without sugar but with pesticide .no wonder we get sick and no normal antibiotics dont work.

If Modi said Bhutan is in Nepal when he visited there recently,
do you really believe he knows the places where Indian Tea is grown?
He will tell you he saw with his own eyes it is grown in Nepal... too....
He used to make and sell tea - it did not matter then and it does not now too where it is grown.
