Mangalore, Sep 7: The category I Instrument Landing System (ILS) facility that will aid safe landing of aircraft will be formally made available at Bajpe (Mangalore) airport here from September 8.

With this Mangalore airport will become one of the major airports that provide category I ILS facility to aircraft. Mangalore airport already provides 24-hour air traffic services to overflying aircraft.

The category I ILS facility will be made available to aircraft landing on the new runway from Friday onwards, M R Vasudev, director, Mangalore airport, has said.

With this the visibility limit for aircraft approaching for landing at the airport would be reduced from 1,300 mts to 800 mts, he said.

An aircraft could land on a runway under two navigation rules namely Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Visual Flight Rules (VFR). From Friday onwards aircraft landing on the new runway could land under IFR. At present aircraft were landing under VFR, Vasudev said.

Instruments flying through clouds to do navigation and control of the aircraft is allowed under IFR and not under VFR. The most important concept of flying under IFR is that it allows continued flight operations in reduced visibility. During this time the ability of a pilot to physically see and avoid collision with other aircrafts or obstacles is reduced.
