Mangalore, Aug 26: District secretary of Construction Workers Union, Vasant Achary, who observed that the officials have been following delaying tactics in respect of facilities formulated by the central government for the benefit of construction workers, expressed resentment at this lethargy. He warned of leading a strong agitation if the officials continue with the present attitude.

He was speaking after taking part in the protest meet organized on Monday August 25 at Thokkottu Junction on behalf of Buildings and Other Construction Workers Union in association with Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

Achary noted that there has been inordinate delay in disbursement of facilities to registered beneficiary building workers. "Poor construction workers are facing lot of injustice. Delay in extending facilities in spite of the fact that Labour Welfare Board has enough money is not at all justified. The department needs to take urgent steps to set right the policy of doing injustice, failing which CITU will fight it out till the demands are met," he added.

He demanded immediate disbursement of compensation to deceased workers and those who underwent surgeries since February 2013, disbursement of student scholarships to their children and financial assistance towards conducting marriage. He also urged the government to allot
separate office and additional employees to Construction Workers Welfare Board.

CPM Ullal block secretary Krishnappa Salian, Ullal block president of Construction Workers Union Jayanth Naik, Ashok Chembugudde, Rohidas, and several others were present.
