Modi's 100 days: Has the 'acche din' hype boomeranged?

By Amulya Ganguli

New Delhi, Aug 29 (IANS): A month after assuming office, Narendra Modi had rued the absence in his case of the customary honeymoon period for a new prime minister. Now, the by-election setbacks and signs of dissonance at the top have cast a further shadow on his first 100 days as prime minister.

The sombre mood was not quite what he might have expected at the start of his tenure. The prime minister and his party were then on a roll, having achieved what they could not have imagined in their wildest dreams before the general election - an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha.

Modi's stature was at its zenith then, as was exemplified by his sitting on a throne-like chair on a platform to address the ministers and party men sitting some distance away at a lower level.

That his word was law was also evident from the fact that his approval was necessary even for the selection of staff by the ministers. He also reduced to silence those of his colleagues who spoke out of turn, as a minister in the Prime Minister's Office did on article 370 concerning Kashmir or Gen. V.K. Singh did on the new army chief.

Now, Modi's exalted position has received a glancing blow from the BJP's failure to perform up to expectations in the by-elections. And the evidence of a rift between Home Minister Rajnath Singh and another as yet unnamed senior minister has dented the government's image.

To what extent these intimations of political mortality will cramp the PM's style is not known. In all likelihood, it will make him all the more aware of the need to push ahead with greater vigour on both the administrative and political fronts.

There is little doubt that the perception that he is not living up to his reputation as a doer is partly responsible for the marginal slide in the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) electoral position.

As of now, there is little to show for his presence at the helm. The generally upbeat mood in the share markets is based more on the expectations of 'achhe din' or good days than on reality.

There has been no ostensible flow of foreign investment or of a surge in developmental activity such as the construction of roads and bridges. All that is palpable so far is a plethora of promises, whether it is bullet trains or e-governance or smart cities or bank account-based debit cards for the poor or toilets in schools and for women.

Admittedly, it is acknowledged that all these programmes will take time to be implemented. But the flip side of today's so-called aspirational generation is that their patience is seemingly limited. Unless there are visible signs of progress, even in the matter of cleanliness or "swachh Bharat", including a cleansed Ganga, the young appear to lose interest.

This is what seems to have happened in the electoral arena, suggesting that Modi's spin doctors may have overplayed the hype over the coming good days. Their exaggeration appears to have now boomeranged.

The scene might have been better if, for instance, the retrospective tax had been nullified to assure investors or a more determined effort was made to push through the bill on raising the foreign cap in the insurance sector instead of submitting to the Congress' obstructionism.

If some of the energy which the government has spent on shunting governors appointed by the previous regime had been diverted to these measures, then the overall impression of its effectiveness might have been more favourable.

It is also undeniable that the government has been hurt more by the words and deeds of its friends than its foes. While the latter had been in a state of demoralization till their spirits were revived by the recent by-poll results, there are people in the saffron camp like Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat and the BJP gadfly, Subramanian Swamy, who have harmed the government's credibility with their uninhibited espousal of the Hindu agenda.

Arguably, the communal polarization caused by Bhagwat's assertion that India is a Hindu nation, and Swamy's letter to the PM on building the Ram temple helped parties like the Congress in Karnataka and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD)-Janata Dal (United) combine in Bihar to strengthen their Muslim base of support in the by-elections.

These parties must have also succeeded in eroding whatever little minority support which the BJP received during the general election by exploiting the provocative stance of some of the saffron stalwarts like Yogi Adityanath on the so-called 'Love Jihad' of Muslim youths intent on converting and marrying Hindu girls.

In addition, the anti-English stance of an outfit like the Angrezi Virodhi Manch, which intends to do away with English all over the country, cannot but reinforce the BJP's image of being a party of rustic, blinkered elements in what is known as the cow belt, which is the derogatory term for the Hindi heartland used by those who do not live there.

Considering that a main impetus behind Modi's rise was his reputation of being a modernist, the communal and language fanatics will be a drag on his rule unless he checks them.

My friend Gyaan, Thanks for your comments. Who doesn’t want India to prosper ? everyone wants to see India a vibrant nation progressing in all front, especially in infrastructure, roads etc. What my worry is in 100 days, already cracks are started building up in so called Mr. Modi's empire, just see how is has sidelined few people and already there are rift between him and HM, probably due to upcoming UP elections. We have seen this type of in-fighting enough in the past across party-line and do not want to see it again in the future. We need development, let us not dig into past who did what ? Likewise Mr. Modi’s 100 days are also past and history now and no better. Let him deliver in balance 4.7 years what he has pampered in election rally’s!

Many started evaluating Narendra Modiji's 100 day performance. My dear fellow Indians, what the previous governments could not change in the last 68 years, how can this man change it within 100 days? And if you really want change to happen, you should be the change. The question here is, Why cant we act responsible on our own? For that, start with these simple practices:
    1. Do not litter your surroundings. Throwing empty chocolate wrappers or juice cartons from cars spitting throwing cigarette butts, paper and what not. But how come when the same people go abroad, they are on their best behavior?
    2. Drive responsibly. Do no honk unnecessarily. Be sensitive.
    3. Follow rules. Be it traffic rules on the road or filing your taxes or standing in a queue for movie tickets. Do things like they are to be done.
    4. Be proud to be an Indian.#JaiHind
    5. Be Helpful. If you see someone needing help, on the road or anywhere else, don't hesitate to help.
Agreed, not many things are right with our country - right from the education and health system to our politicians. But we can make a difference. Lets not wait for Narendra Modiji to do the above for us. In my opinion, he is doing his best for the country.
If he fails, we will not vote for him next time, as simple as that. Give him some time. #StayBlessed.

Modi's inexperience in ruling federal India visible in his 100 days of admin.

    1)Foreign Policy

Embarked for a ambitious friendly relations with neighbors but turned to non starter except Nepal.Pak shelling in LOC area unprecedented and BSF statement indicate that after 1971 such heavy shelling took place.China intrudes 25KM deep in to Indian territory from LOC also a subject of worry. Both countries are nuclear armed.

    Internal Policy

Communal clashes are increased manifold.Media reports that especially in UP it was engineered by BJP itself!!A national party like BJP takes refuge in so called LOVE JIHAD for vote bank which is worry of Indian citizens and aptly BJP MP who is @ fore in advocating HINDU-MUSLIM division in LOVE JIhad deputed as star Campaigner in UP for Assembly election.

    Economic Policy

Inflation is all time high and food inflation is skyrocketed.Rupee is under pressure andby and large unemployment remained same.Economic Policy is just relay of UPA and project's name only changed. So far Modi inaugurated projects which are on the verge of Completion under UPA Govt.

He is determined in doing it, selfless, totally devoted and ready for any sacrifice for the sake of the Mother India. He has inner power because of his devotion and sincerity which makes him successful. He has no attachment to anybody except the mother country, no friends and does not allow any of the relatives to come near him which can become an obstruction because of the relation. With the coalition government compulsions, UPA was not able to tackle corruption. BJP can tackle this head on, and that alone will be ache din for India.

Let us give him time to see how he handles the corruption, past and the present. If he cleans up that much of mess, he scores a point. Ofcourse he loses few votes of those corrupt officials, they never thought that it will boomerang on them.

The next issue is communal / fundamental. He surely knows his vote bank and financiers flourished in democratic western countries, from where they are fueling communal ism in India. They live among tranquil atmosphere and cry foul for India.

We cite examples such as Pakistan or Iraq or Syria where there is no freedom, oppression of minorities, but we do not site examples of all other countries, namely the middle east, US, UK, Canada, Australia, Africa, where due to equal opportunities, Indians have made good fortune and had peaceful living, which is not even available for us in India now.
Truth needs to be told. Do we want to be like another Pakistan or similar country or do we want to be other Middle Eastern countries or the west, where people do not incite trouble on religion but for social justice.

But PM must be knowing the TRUTH and wisdom will prevail. How he intends to go down in history - he definitely loves his name.

These schemes and yojanas are going to be popular for a short duration and thereafter surely boomerang.

To bark it is easy but to bite it needs courage ! Mr. Modi proved it as an example of this saying in 100 days.

I never saw Manmohan bark, well he was always silent, silent when there were scams, silent when pak beheaded our 2 Jawans, Silent when Chinese army took a tour in India, Silent when Coalgate happened, Silent when Railgate happened, Silent all the time, Barking does help and for 100 days its a great achievement compared to 10 years of filth.

Mr./ Ms. / Mrs. I<3 Gyaan Peet !, whoever you are ! Your listing may go on another A4 size but Mr. Modi came to power by terming Mr. Manmohan as ' Nikamma PM ', agreed, which means if he terms somebody 'Nikaamma', Mr. Modi must deliver AS SUPERHUMAN IN 100DAYS right ? hang on ! there are more cross border fires ever since 1971, inflation day by day going high, for rapes these is no control, even minister sons are involved, etc. etc. Do you want my side of A4 size of listing of 100 days performance ? again " To bark it is easy but to bite it needs courage ! "

Just to make a point regarding inflation... You are seeing all this because your earlier ministers made a lot of scams and put us into this place. Well u decide you have another 4.7 years to bear Mr.Modi

Jo garajta hai woh barasta nahin. Only barking, no concrete action.
Silence is golden. MMS followed this principle.
