Karkal, Sep 2: The state government should have protected the interests of people in rural area and daily wagers soon after coming to power. The government is trying to evict thousands of farmers due to its wrong decision instead. It has come to drive away farmers who are cultivating the land for the last several years, said opposition leader in the legislative assembly MLA V Sunil Kumar, recently.

In a press meeting held at Vikasa office, he said that the state government has submitted an affidavit to the state high court saying that the farmers are clearing the land and illegally acquiring it.

A notice to that effect is served to all the concerned.

“They have identified 5,981 acres of land acquired in Udupi district. It has issued notices to farmers who are residing in 2,886 acres of land in Karkal. There are 4,982 cases in Karkal and 616 people are served notice of illegal possession of land.
More than ten thousand people in Udupi are facing difficulties because of this notice. Most of them have submitted applications under Akrama Sakrama scheme. Several of the farmers possess 15-20 cents to 3-4 acres of land. The action of the state government is condemnable”, he added.

He demanded not to take a hasty action until Akrama Sakrama and Kumki right programmes are implemented. He threatened of protests all over the state if the government evicts farmers from the land.
