Panaji, Oct 19: Goa is preparing for a surge in tourist arrivals as the festive season approaches, with beach shacks reopening, improved air and road connectivity, and growing interest in local cultural experiences expected to boost the winter tourism season.

According to Agoda data, searches by Indian travellers for Goa during the October-November holiday period have increased by nearly 43% year-on-year, reflecting the state’s continued popularity as a destination for festive getaways and extended holidays.

Goa Tourism Minister Rohan A Khaunte said the state was looking forward to a vibrant festive season as travellers planned their Dussehra and Diwali holidays. He said the reopening of beach shacks and improved connectivity through both airports would help Goa welcome visitors from across India and abroad.

He added that the government was focused on strengthening year-round tourism, improving visitor experiences and creating opportunities for local businesses and communities. He also encouraged tourists to explore Goa’s heritage, cuisine and culture alongside its beaches.

The upcoming Dussehra celebrations on October 20, followed by the Diwali holiday period in early November, are expected to encourage short breaks, family holidays and leisure travel. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, beach shacks and other tourism operators are preparing for the anticipated influx.

Cruz Cardozo, president of the Shack Owners’ Welfare Society, said most beach shacks across Goa were operational and ready to welcome visitors for the festive and winter season.

He said tourists could look forward to Goan cuisine, local experiences and the hospitality of the coastal communities. He also urged visitors to respect local culture, follow the law and help keep beaches clean and safe.

Improved air connectivity is expected to further support tourist arrivals. Goa International Airport at Dabolim and Manohar International Airport at Mopa continue to connect the state with major destinations. Airlines are expanding services and frequencies as part of their winter schedules.

Recent announcements include Akasa Air’s plans to launch direct flights between Chandigarh and Goa from December, alongside efforts to strengthen international connectivity.

Kedar Naik, Director of Tourism, Government of Goa, said preparations were underway to ensure a safe and seamless visitor experience, with a focus on responsible tourism. He encouraged travellers to explore the state’s diverse offerings, including heritage, nature, wellness, cuisine and hinterland experiences.

Beyond its beaches, Goa offers heritage walks through Fontainhas and Old Goa, culinary tours, spice plantation visits, river cruises, wellness retreats and hinterland exploration.

Wildlife conservationist and Mrugaya Xpeditions founder Parag Rangnekar said Goa offered opportunities to experience tropical biodiversity, coastal and wetland wildlife, guided nature walks and local community traditions. He said activities such as birdwatching, forest walks, village visits and coastal excursions could add variety to conventional holiday itineraries.

The anticipated rise in tourist arrivals is expected to benefit a wide range of sectors, including hotels, homestays, restaurants, beach shacks, taxi operators, local guides, artisans and experience providers.
