Udupi, Sep 13: Reports from Kaup said that a government employee used his retired colleague’s ATM card to cheat here of Rs 1, 27,526.  While the accused is identified as Selvaraj, a driver at the Shirva Primary Health Centre, Bhavani, who had retired as senior health assistant is the victim.

Bhavani had retired from her service a year ago.  She had opened a savings account (No 01190008648) with SBI for avail her retirement benefits and some old bills.  Accordingly the department had deposited Rs 2, 18,026 to her account as part of her retirement benefits.  The bank had issued an ATM card to Bhavani for her use.
 
Since she did not know to operate with ATM card, she had asked Selvaraj to handle her account and help her.  But Selvaraj withdrew all the money from her account in phases and gave only Rs 90, 500 to Bhavani.  The rest of the money, he used for himself.

Bhavani had retired from her service on June 30, 2005.  But when she did not get the retirement benefits even after a year, she went to the PHC and enquired about it.  There it was told that money due to her was deposited to her SBI account.  So she went to Selvaraj and asked him to check her account.  She also asked him to return her pass book and ATM card.  But Selvaraj did not return the ATM card.

So she directly went to the bank where she found out that money was deposited to her account in February 2006 and the same was withdrawn in phases till July 2006.  Having come to know that she had been cheated by Selvaraj, she has now gone up to the departmental heads asking for justice.
