115 killed as heavy rain continues to lash Pakistan

Islamabad, Sep 6 (IANS): At least 115 people were killed in separate incidents triggered by torrential rain in Pakistan, media reported Saturday.

According to officials, almost the entire city of Lahore is submerged in rainwater which exceeds the draining capacity of the city, Dawn online reported.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department said the rain-generating well marked low pressure area had weakened and moved to India.

However, the department warned of another round of torrential rain over the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej rivers, along with Rawalpindi, Gujranwala and Lahore before it dissipates by Sunday.

Reports from different parts of the country indicated huge losses in property, cattle and crops due to swelling of drains and the Chenab and Jhelum rivers.

Officials from the National Disaster Management Authority said that a number of cities all over the country have received over 130 mm of rain.

Monsoon rains hit Pakistan every year in June and start retreating in the first week of September.
