Mangalore This Week: Sep 10 - 16

By Anisa Fathima - Daijiworld.com Mangalore

The week saw a huge ATM crime taking place in Udupi district, with a retired woman being cheated of Rs 1,27,567 by her own colleague. The woman, a former senior health assistant with the government, did not know how to operate the ATM card given to her by SBI, and trusted her colleague to take care of her ATM account, who royally took advantage of the situation.

The banks have a lesson to learn here. Lots of people do not know to operate ATMs; therefore, it would be better if, the banks, while issuing the cards, gave a brief training to those who require it. Though a difficult task, it would be easier if the card-holders themselves sought the help of the banks than placing their trust on outsiders.

Meanwhile, the city corporation and the state government received a huge setback when the High Court overruled their decision to change the reservation for the mayor's post from general woman to general category. The city will now have a lady mayor.

The BJP-JD (S) government's decision to change the reservation policy had sparked off opposition from women corporators and Congress party members. Now with the Court's verdict, district in-charge minister Nagaraj Shetty and other BJP-JD (S) leaders would have a lot to explain as to why they wanted it changed; as the motive behind this is still a mystery. Is it merely a case of gender bias or something deeper? Only time will tell. Be it what it may, it is definitely a big victory to the women corporators.

MANGALORE: VERDICT IS OUT - CITY TO HAVE LADY MAYOR

It was a pleasant surprise when the skies opened up to provide a much-needed respite from the heat to the district dwellers. The showers were sudden and heavy, but, thankfully, did not disrupt normal life to a great extent. However, low-lying areas in the district were flooded with rain water although no loss of life was reported except for the one person who died of lightning strike.

The administration would do well to prepare itself to counter such sudden showers at least till the season completely departs. Potholes on the roads which the administration neglected to fill were full of water again, posing great danger to commuters. The district had a long gap since the last showers poured on the city; the administration could have taken the opportunity to repair the roads, at least the potholes. Now the state of the roads has worsened, and road travel continues to be a terrible experience.

Friday September 15 was a day of celebration to Mangaloreans, as two significant events took place.

Mandira Bedi thrilled her fans in the city when she arrived here as part of Gully Cricket promoted by the popular MAX channel. The famed anchor and actor, along with cricket anchor Charu Sharma attracted huge crowds at the two city colleges where gully cricket was played.

Boundaries and sixes, especially by Charu Sharma delighted the crowds, which vied with each other to shake hands with the celebrities or take a photograph with them. Amidst all this, the discipline among them was commendable. It was heartening that in spite of large crowds, no untoward incident took place, and that even the rain stopped itself to watch the lively stars that entertained Mangaloreans like never before.

The other news that filled Mangaloreans, especially those in UAE, with joy is the Air India Express finally opening online flight bookings for the long-awaited direct Dubai-Mangalore sector. The inaugural flight is scheduled to take off on October 3.

The dream shared by thousands, most probably more, is finally nearing realization. There might be many who would still feel skeptical, given the fact that it has taken years and years and promises after promises to come this far. When the first flight takes off, it will be a tribute to the efforts put in by stalwarts like Rajesh Sequiera and several others who kept up the fight despite several setbacks.
