Mumbai, Sep 10 (TNN): As revellers were bidding adieu to Ganpati, the city saw two deaths. In the first case, Mahim resident Mahadev Gurav (55) died a week after he sustained head injury during a Ganpati procession.
While Mahadev's family claimed a policeman had assaulted him, senior inspector Dastgir Mulla said they are probing the allegation.
On September 4, the Guravs were taking their idol for immersion, when Mahadev, who was drunk, couldn't keep up. His family advised him to rest outside a temple, and said they would take him home after the immersion. Friends of Mahadev's son, Krunal, told the family that a cop assaulted him when he was walking home. When he didn't regain consciousness, they took him to hospital, where doctors said that he had serious head injury. Mahadev died on Sunday.
In the second incident, an organizing committee member of Parsiwadi Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal in Ghatkopar, Dattaram Sakpal (48) died at Rajawadi Hospital. The mandal alleged the hospital authorities were responsible for his death as they did not treat him on time. Dr Vidya Thakur, medical superintendent, said, "We have instituted an inquiry and will take a decision after getting the report." The inquiry team will rely on the autopsy report, which will be available in a few days.
