Eleven killed, 5 injured in road accident in UP


Mathura, Sep 23 (IANS): Eleven labourers from Farukkhabad district of Uttar Pradesh were killed and five injured when a tractor-trailer ploughed into them on the Agra-Delhi national highway, near the Kotvan state border early Tuesday.

Police said two dozen labourers from Farukkhabad were riding a truck to work in Rajasthan. As the axle of the truck broke down, the labourers disembarked and were waiting on the roadside for another vehicle. Some sat on the road.

Since it was yet dark, the labourers perhaps were not be seen by the driver and a speeding tractor-trailer ran over them, killing 11 on the spot and seriously injuring five.

Five of the victims have been identified, said police. The injured are being treated at Mathura district hospital.

Those killed included two women and one child.
