About 31 lakh employees to take cleanliness pledge tomorrow

New Delhi, Oct 1 (PTI) : About 31 lakh central government employees working across the country will take a pledge of cleanliness in various public functions to be organised tomorrow as part of the Narendra Modi administration's 'Clean India' campaign.

In addition, lakhs of state government employees have been asked to be part of this massive drive which will be launched by the Prime Minister here tomorrow.

"It has been decided that on October 2, 'Swachhta Shapath' (cleanliness pledge) will be administered to all in government offices and public functions or events and cleanliness drive led by senior officers will be undertaken in all government and public offices," Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth said in a communique to secretaries of all departments.

There are about 30.98 lakh central government employees in the country. Each central government department has made plans to administered the oath to its employees.

Home Secretary Anil Goswami will administered the cleanliness pledge to employees of Home Ministry and Personnel Ministry tomorrow in North Block premises.

The Prime Minister has given a call for 'Swachh Bharat' (Clean India) as a mass movement to realise Mahatma Gandhi's dream of a clean India by 2019, when the country will celebrate 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation.

"For a campaign of this nature to be successful, there is a need to create massive public awareness and to ensure participation and action for cleaning homes, government offices, schools, hospitals, work places, streets, roads and markets, railway stations and bus terminals, statues, monuments, rivers, lakes, ponds, parks and other public places.

"It is important to involve government and public sector officials at every level, non-government organisations, education and health institutions, rural and urban local bodies, self-help groups, youth organisations, resident and market associations as well as business and industrial chambers and associations in the cleanliness and awareness drives," Seth said in his letter.

A variety of activities such as pledge-taking marches, marathons, debates, street plays, music and essay competitions, cleaning drives and other community activities may be used to focus public attention on this campaign and on the need for cleanliness, Seth said.

Meanwhile, the departments heads have swung into action and directed concerned officials to clear office premises of clutter, garbage, building materials, unused vehicles and others.

As long as people change their mentality from Chaltha hai re, kohi puchne wala nahi hai, kuch hone wala nahi hai....... India will not get cleaned.

People from abroad, will not throw or spat on roads in this country because of fear from strict rules, but once they go back to India we will continue same mentality that we had before Chaltha hai…….

So its individual responsibility to keep clean and not only politicians or officials.

CLEANLINESS IS NEXT TO GODLINESS = Definitions
if someone says that cleanliness is next to godliness, they are referring to the idea that people have a moral duty to keep themselves and their homes clean.

Better late than never - let us all join in this campaign to make our country a Clean place - indeed, this may take a few decades given the poor infrastructure like clean and decent public toilets, and our mental make up of "keep my house clean - but the public areas are not my business" - It is a nightmare to travel in India as the Airports & Planes are often filthy, same goes for the Railway Station and the Trains, The Bus stands and the buses, the roads and parks, people eat, spit, piss, shit and wash themselves in public places, besides being a health hazard, one shudders at the stink and dirt one has to wade thru every day. If each one of us makes it a point to be disciplined and ensure that we keep ourselives and the areas around us clean, it may go a long way in seeing a clean India. At the moment we cannot impose a penalty for dirtying public areas as here are insufficient bins and toilets and those that are there are
unusable - even the public utilities in posh malls despite being constantly cleaned are left dirty by us - basic things like flushing or wiping the wash basin
after use are neglected as we could not care less for the next person who would certainly not want to use a dirty place - summary = we Indians are Dirty and are so used to filth that a sterile and clean atmosphere makes us uncomfortable.

I appreciate that government has identified the need and initiated actions to clean the country.

As many of you have commented cleaning for a day to get the media attention may not be successful in meeting the objective.

Habbits come from practise, whether it is good or bad.

We should ensure that habbit of keeping the premises, city and country clean should be inculcated from the childhood and more awareness need to be created among all the citizens.

Government should provide proper waste management system and facilities to dispose the waste.

If there are no garbage bins to throw off the waste and no well maintained public toilets, people will end up in throwing the wastes on the streets and urinating in the public. I have seen this happening in Mangalore city bus stand for example. Not sure how is the situation now.

Introducing penalty system like we have have in some developed coutries could also help provided there is proper system for waste disposal.

I pity on the person who introduced relegion to this subject.

We are talking about development of our own country India.

For the matter of fact river Ganga is polluted by all sorts of pollutants which includes industrial pollutants, domestic waste, funerals conducted on the banks of the river, etc.

Indians who live abroad follow the rules and regulation of the country where they live (as far as I have seen). But while in India we have attitude like "Chalta hai".
This needs to be changed by creating awareness.

Government institutions, schools and NGOs'could provide a major contribution in this regard.

Yesterday I asked my college going daughter that are you aware that there is a swatch abhiyan which will be held in public?. She said yes. The same thing is being held in school also she said. Then i asked her the question ,how many times you have cleaned the house or the toilet yourself. There was no answer.Bapu was doing small things himself .He never hesistated to clean his own house or toilet and avoid engaging scavengers to do this. Can our politicians do this or even non politiicans. Today we require one laborer for washing our clothes, other cleaning our house, third to clean our garden. Can the Govt servants clean their own offices everyday or for that matter the toilets they use. These are all gimmicks in the name of Bapu. If someone really wants to do something then do it but not for the same of limelight.

In the year 2006, soon after completion of my engg, I decided not to throw any waste/garbage outside. Since then I have followed this very strictly. I keep the bus ticket, bills, petrol bunk receipts, hotel food receipts, chocolate covers, or any other materials in my pocket until I find a dustbin or till I come home. I dispose them in public dustbin if I find any or dustbin of my home.

I don't spit on roads or in public.

I always use the plain/empty back side of the bills/ticket prints outs for writing purposes in my office.

But sometimes I urinate on road sides in Bangalore because it is something which I can't control and there are very very few public toilets in Bangalore. I am sorry for this MOTHER INDIA. If Govt builds public toilet for every 5 KM or 10 KM distance I pledge to stop this also.

Dear friends, the idea of keeping our country is real a good step of our Prime Minister. I strongly feel this we should start with the beginning of our upcoming children.Few days back I was driving behind one of the so called very famous school bus , I saw some of the children throwing some eatable empty packet (plastic) and these schools are declaring 100 percent of result in education. And to achieve this they even keep classes on Sundays also. But my question whether these institutions are building up their career or their bank balance by torchering the poor children.
