Indian editions of Pope Francis and Mother Teresa books released

Media Release

Bangalore, Oct 6: Low-priced editions of books The Church of Mercy: His First Major Book – A Message of Hope for All People by Pope Francis and Jesus is My All in All: A Novena to Blessed Teresa of Calcutta were released today by Most Rev Bernard Moras, Archbishop of Bangalore, at a programme organised by the city unit of the Conference of Religious of India (CRI).

Pope Francis, who heads the 1.2 billion member Catholic Church, has been widely acclaimed for his spiritual leadership. As part of his revolutionary new vision for the Church, Francis calls on all believers to be ‘full-time Christians’ and not ‘living-room Christians’, and to struggle against the trappings of power, and the worship of money and careerism. The Church of Mercy collects for the first time, with full Vatican approval, his words and writings on these themes during his first year as Pope.

Jesus is My All in All culls some of Mother Teresa’s most stirring words into a powerful book that anyone will treasure. It follows the Roman Catholic novena format, a nine-day rhythm of prayer and reflection.

The first copies were presented by the Archbishop to Sr Margaret Lourdunathan SSpS, President - CRI Bangalore Unit, Sr Sundari Singareddy JMJ, Provincial - Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, Bangalore, Fr. George Chathnatt SSP, Superior - Society of St. Paul, Bangalore, Sr. Kusumam MC, Superior - Missionaries of Charity, Nirmala Shishu Bhavan, Bangalore.

The books have been published by Bangalore-based Asian Trading Corporation (ATC), a 69-year old Christian literature publishing and distribution house.

Last month, ATC also made available affordable Indian editions of two books by Mother Teresa - Come Be My Light: The Private Writings of the "Saint of Calcutta" and Where There is Love, There is God: A Path to Closer Union with God and Greater Love for Others. These were released at the Mother House in Kolkata on 5th September, the death anniversary of Mother Teresa, by Most Rev. Thomas D'Souza, Archbishop of Kolkata and Sr. Prema MC, Mother Teresa’s successor.

Come Be My Light collects the letters Mother Teresa wrote to her spiritual advisors over decades, almost all of which have never been made public before. They shed light on Mother Teresa's interior life in a way that reveals the depth and intensity of her holiness for the first time.

In Where There is Love There is God Mother Teresa’s relationship with God and her commitment to those she served – the poorest of the poor – is powerfully explored in her own words taken largely from her private lessons to her Sisters.

Other best-sellers published by ATC include The Holy Bible RSV-Catholic Edition and RSV-Second Catholic Edition, YOUCAT and titles by Fulton Sheen. In April 2010, Pope Benedict XVI issued a personally signed letter recommending that ATC publish a special edition of his book, The Spirit of the Liturgy for Asia. Since then ATC has also published his other best-selling books including Jesus of Nazareth, Light of the World, Introduction to Christianity.

The newly released books are available for sale at all leading bookstores, online stores such as Flipkart, Amazon, and from the publisher’s website – www.atcbooks.in.

Thank you ATC for putting Mother Teresa's own writings within the reach of Indians, the people whom she served for the most part of her life. Together with Pope Francis's book, they are sure to be a signpost for the spiritual life of the Church in India.
