New skill development policy by end of this fiscal

New Delhi, Oct 7 (IANS) The government is in the process of revising the National Policy on Skill Development, 2009, and it will be ready by the end of this fiscal year, an official said Tuesday.

"There were instructions that the policy will be ready by March 31, 2015," Sunil Arora, secretary, the ministry of skill development and entrepreneurship, told reporters.

He was attending a conference on skill development organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

"We are receiving suggestions from various ministries. Once they are received, a draft policy will be made and placed on the ministry website to invite comments from public and other stakeholders," he said.

The existing policy was formulated by the labour ministry in 2009 to skill 500 million people under a standardised framework, keeping in mind the international norms, and based on industry demands.

It led to the setting up of the National Skill Development Corporation under a public-private partnership mode.

The policy is being revised so that other schemes and Rs.10,000 crore earmarked to encourage entrepreneurship can be used.
