Government to build 30 million houses by 2022

New Delhi, Oct 9 (IANS): Around 30 million houses will be built by 2022 under the soon-to-be launched Sardar Patel Urban Housing Mission, union Housing Minster Venkaiah Naidu said here Thursday.

Naidu said that the project will benefit the poor and is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for "Har Parivar ko Ghar" (A house for every family).

Naidu said the houses will be "built through public-private-partnership, interest subsidy and increased flow of resources to housing sector."

Speaking at an event to mark the World Habitat Day, the minister said an investment of about Rs.50 lakh crore would be required over the next few years for various initiatives like housing for all, urban infrastructure development, urban sanitation and building smart cities.

The cost for housing for all would be 22.50 lakh crore, while Rs. 16.50 lakh crore would be required to develop urban infrastructure, Naidu said.

For urban sanitation and creating smart cities, Rs. 62,000 crore would be needed.
