Mangalore, Nov 7: "Helmet" is the talk of the town now.  After wearing helmet was made compulsory in 6 city corporation limits in the state from November 1, sale of helmets has increased by leaps and bounds.  Some of the dealers are running out of stock while the riders are running out of time.

Though the rule was effective from the same day in the city, police had made it clear that riders will be given some concession till Monday November 5 so that they could buy helmets.  So from Monday, it was compulsory for all the two-wheeler riders to wear helmets while riding.  Accordingly almost 80% of the riders were seen with helmets.  But there were some more who tried to dodge and go ahead.

However, the traffic police were quite vigilant.  In all police filed cases against 211 riders and fined them Rs 100 each on the very first day.  Hearing about police action, some others changed their route and rushed to helmet dealers.  But some of the dealers were running out stock while in one or two other places, they had to pull shutters down owing to heavy rush.

Meanwhile those who had bought helmets without ISI mark too are in dilemma now since it is made mandatory that helmets should have ISI mark.  Those wearing helmets without the ISI mark too would be fined.  It is pathetic to see riders being fined despite wearing helmets but of course without ISI mark.

Whatever it is, one thing is sure that helmet industry would profit more than anyone else in the bargain.  Helmets which cost Rs 300-400 are now priced at Rs 500-700.  But customers have no choice than to buy.  There is no time to wait and see whether the prices will come down.  So, the dealers, helmets companies are feasting on the plight of riders.
