Udupi, Nov 28: In a rare surgery, a tumour was successfully removed from the brain of a ten-month old baby by a team of neurosurgeons led by Dr A Raja, professor and head of Neurosurgery at KMC in Manipal here.
A press release stated that the baby Prajwal was admitted to KMC following symptoms such as increased sleepiness, vomiting, refusal to eat, and frequent lapses into unconscious state. A CT scan revealed a large tumour in the brain located near the brain stem, a crucial point and was causing shallow breathing in the baby.
The doctors in the team were Dr Sachin Jindal, Dr Roopjyothi Hazarika and Dr Anand, anaesthesiologist. The surgery was conducted at KMC hospital using microneurosurgical technique.
The baby is responding well and has recovered quikly. A successful brain tumour surgery at such a tender age was rare, the release stated.
