DUBAI — Dec. 16: Hundreds of Etisalat subscribers yesterday became victims of a prank SMS received on their mobile phones luring them to forward the message to 10 different subscribers.

The message said they would receive Dh25 per message in their account if they forward it to 10 more subscribers on the occasion of Etisalat’s anniversary yesterday.

No Etisalat official was available yesterday for any comment. However, a customer service source at Etisalat said “the message was a prank by some mobile phone user. Etisalat has not released such a message because December 15 is not the anniversary of Etisalat. Besides, if an SMS message is released by Etisalat, it will clearly mention the name of the corporation in the senders name .”

A subscriber A. Ahmed complained that such prank messages should be monitored by Etisalat and people propagating them should be penalised.

Subscribers noted that Etisalat  may have raised large sums of money yesterday as hundreds of messages were being circulated.
