Pope canonizes Indian-origin Joseph Vaz as Sri Lanka's first saint

Colombo, Jan 14 (PTI): Pope Francis on Wednesday canonized Indian-origin Catholic missionary Joseph Vaz as Sri Lanka’s first saint at a public mass on Colombo seafront attended by thousands as he described the 17th century priest as a model for national reconciliation after the deadly civil war.

Hundreds of thousands of people erupted in applause at the holy mass at Galle Face promenade on Wednesday morning when Pope Francis declared Joseph Vaz, who was born in 1651 in Goa then a Portuguese colony, a saint at the start of the service.

Vaz went to Sri Lanka in 1687 to minister to the scattered faithful after Dutch colonisers who had seized the island’s coastal areas from the Portuguese began persecuting Catholics.

Vaz travelled from village to village ministering to Catholics from both the Tamil and the majority Sinhalese ethnic groups.

By the time of his death in 1711 he had largely rebuilt the Catholic Church, earning him the title ‘Apostle of Sri Lanka’.

After the canonisation, Pope Francis,78, told the crowd, “St Joseph shows us the importance of transcending religious divisions in the service of peace.”

Speaking slowly in English, the Pope said Christians should follow the example of Vaz to build peace, justice and reconciliation.

“As the life of St Joseph Vaz teaches us, genuine worship of God bears fruit not in discrimination, hatred and violence, but in respect for the sacredness of life, respect for the dignity and freedom of others, and loving commitment to the welfare of all,” he said.

He said the Sri Lankan church wants to continue Vaz’s legacy of service to all, saying “Religious freedom is a fundamental human right.”

Catholics make up about 7 per cent of Sri Lanka’s 20 million population, while 10 times as many people follow Buddhism.

The Pope also blessed a disabled girl at the mass where he was presented with the key to the city of Colombo by Mayor A J M Muzammil.

Upon his arrival in Sri Lanka on Tuesday, he had called for reconciliation and “pursuit of truth” to promote “justice, healing and unity” after years of war with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which ended in 2009 with the army crushing the Tamil Tiger rebels.

“The process of healing also needs to include the pursuit of truth, not for the sake of opening old wounds, but rather as a necessary means of promoting justice, healing and unity,” he had said. Vaz is credited with having revived the Catholic faith in the country. Vaz rescued and expanded the Shrine of Our Lady of Madhu, one of the 5 officially crowned Marian Shrines of the Church.

He is the first non-European native in modern times to found a mission and church in a Third World country, to found a fully native Catholic Religious Congregation and to be given the official title of Apostle by the Church, for his work in rescuing the Church.

Vaz was beatified by Pope John Paul II during a brief one-day visit to Sri Lanka in 1995.

He is credited with one miracle -- the survival of a baby boy whose mother prayed to him after she was told her child had only a one per cent chance of living.

The Pope will later travel to the northern city of Madhu in Mannar to pray at the Our Lady of Madhu shrine, a Catholic pilgrimage site.

Saint Joseph Vaz’s father was a Goud Saraswat Brahmin Naik family of Sancoale
Saint Joseph Vaz’s parents were Cristóvão Vaz and Maria de Miranda, were devout Catholics. Cristóvão Vaz belonged to a prominent Goud Saraswat Brahmin got converted to Christianity during the Portuguese rule.
Joseph Vaz was actively served missionary in several parts of South Kanara like Mudipu, Bantwal , Mangalore, Basroor, Barcoor, Moolki, Kallianpur. There was tough resistance in some parts our district against his activities some people tried to assassinate him. It seems miracle saved his life. Later he decided to migrate to Sri Lanka to continue his missionary services..

Saint Joseph Vaz pray for us, this is a great news that you been canonized in a country where thousands of innocents were killed in the civil war. Now this country restored its peace. I especially pray for all those souls killed during the civil war and also those died 10 years back in the deadly Tsunami. God bless Sri Lanka our good neighbor.

My friend has become a saint! Praise the Lord!
We in Mangalore are privileged to have a place where this saintly man worked for sometime- namely at Mudipu. The rock where the holy saint knelt in prayer and water sprang out, and the devotion of the people around, stand testimony to the greatness of this saint!
Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth

I was always wondering why many Sri Lankan Cricket players are having Portuguese surnames like Vaz & D'Silva while their first name is Buddhist or Hindu names. Now after reading this article I understood the reason behind Portuguese Surnames for Srilankan Cricketers.

    Ravi,
The Portuguese had colonised Sri Lanka too hence surnames like Pereira (Sri Lankans spell as Perera), D'Silva, Fernando, Fernandes (eg.Bollywood actress Jacqueline Fernandes) etc.

It was great if his holiness would have come. But it is good that he will not come now especially with Bjp and its useless associates like vhp , bd etc. Making drama and they will behave as if they will die if he will come to India. They will also show placards saying that he has come for conversion.

    Allan,
Not only the Parivar groups would object the Pope's visit but in my opinion as long as Modi is PM the Pope will never be invited to visit the faithful in our country. Even if he is invited it will be with the purpose of boosting Modi's image domestically and internationally as a 'Minority/Christian friendly' leader whom we all know he is not. Basically it will be a PR stunt only.
We have seen many of Modi's actions appear to be manipulated for his own image boosting and then further leveraged by clever use of the media.

It would have been quite graceful for India too, to extend the invitation on this occasion. Blessed Joseph Vaz was an Indian, and a stop-over at India would have been lovely.
