Bantwal, Mar 8: It has now come to light that Prabha Arun Kumar, who was stabbed to death in Sydney, Australia while she was on the phone with her husband in Bengaluru, hailed from Amtoor near Kalladka here.

An IT consultant employed with Bengaluru-based tech firm MindTree, Prabha was stabbed to death while she was walking home from work in Sydney. The 41-year-old was attacked at Amos Street in the western part of the city about 9.30 pm on Saturday March 8. She was on the phone with her husband Arun Kumar, who lives in Bengaluru with their 10-year-old daughter, when she was stabbed.

As news of her sudden death came to be known, a pall of gloom descended on Nandagokula, her parental house in Amtoor.

Prabha was the daughter of progressive farmer Mahabala Shetty and Sarojini. She was the second among the couple's six children. She married Arun Kumar 12 years ago, and their daughter Meghana stays with her father in Bengaluru.

Prabha was earlier working as engineer in Bengaluru, and moved to Australia three years ago after she was promoted by the company. She was planning to come to India on vacation in April.

She did her primary schooling in Amtoor and high school and college studies in Mangaluru. She then completed engineering at KVG College, Sullia.

Speaking to daijiworld, a distraught Mahabala Shetty said that the family got a clear picture of the incident only on Sunday evening. "The culprits who killed our daughter should be handed over to us. We will deal with them," he said.

"Those who go to Australia for work have no security. When this is the case, what will be the condition of all those expatriates who work there?" said Prabha's brother Shivaprakash.

Meanwhile, Prabha's husband Arun has already left for Sydney and will take necessary steps. It is learnt that two eyewitnesses of the incident have agreed to cooperate with the Sydney police, and the culprits are expected to be arrested soon.

Bengaluru woman stabbed to death in Sydney

Sydney, Mar 8 (IANS): An Indian woman IT consultant, employed with Bengaluru-based tech firm MindTree, was stabbed to death while she was walking home from work in the Australian city of Sydney, police said on Sunday.

Prabha Arun, in her 40s, was attacked at Amos Street in the western part of the city about 9.30 p.m. on Saturday. She was on the phone with her husband Arun Kumar, who lives in Bengaluru with their 10-year-old daughter, when she was stabbed. She was around 300 metres from her Westmead home when she was attacked.

Chillingly, the husband heard her tell him "I think I've been stabbed", before she collapsed in a pool of blood. The line then went dead. The husband is on his way to Sydney along with their daughter, media reports said.

Police found Prabha Arun "seriously wounded" and took her to the Westmead Hospital where she later died, The Sydney Morning Herald reported, adding that a local man, Arvand Amirian, called police after finding the woman in a pool of blood.

The external affairs ministry spokesperson in New Delhi tweeted that the Consulate General of India in Sydney was aware of the incident. "All necessary assistance is being provided," the spokesperson said.

In Sydney, police superintendent Wayne Cox said Prabha Arun was attacked "by a person or unknown persons, and she consequently suffered a life-threatening injury".

"It's a horrific attack without any stretch of the imagination and certainly my heartfelt condolences go out to the family at this point in time.

"There was a large amount of blood so she obviously suffered a significant wound."

Police said Prabha Arun was attacked with a sharp weapon, but they were yet to find whether the attack was random or targeted.

A flatmate of Prabha Arun said she would speak with her husband every day as soon as she finished work and chat for a long time.

She was planning to move back to India after her working visa expired. She used to work with AMP before starting her job with India-based IT and outsourcing company MindTree in late 2012.

Police are scanning the CCTV footage of her walking from the station along Argyle Street and on to Park Parade to see if there was anyone following her into Parramatta Park.

The attack happened near a cluster of trees with wide open spaces on either side and was 20 metres from the nearest light, media reports said.

Police and homicide detectives have formed a Strike Force Marcoala to probe the murder.

Prabha Arun's flatmate Sarada told The Daily Telegraph she had warned her friend about the dangers of the park.

"I told her that it is not a safe way to come through because there is people that stop and ask you for money, like $2," Sarada said.

Why these techies opt for foreign soil? Is it not just the lure of money? Buddha rightly said that 'desire' is the root cause of all miseries.India has enough and more opportunities . Come back to your motherland my dear countrymen. I strongly appeal to all professionals particularly doctors to come and serve our own people rather than serving these. You are always a secondary citizen irrespective of your social, educational or financial status in these foreign countries . Live with dignity for your motherland.

Very unfortunate to have crisscrossed this killer, what else than fate had its take?

Though I have not traveled to these countries, definitely, overall, Asians look to be looked down upon, especially the dark skinned, and there definitely appears to be lots of repressed angst among the not so well-to-do locals against expatriates who are doing very well, although on the surface it everything appears all hunky dory like everywhere!! Even in the most strictest of countries, there have been an increasing trend of mugging and daring robberies by the locals, the expatriates being victims!!

Look for the Tree/Bush lined pathway (in satellite mode ) which joining "Amos Street with

With due respect to her departed soul, let us keep emotions behind and few observations.
    a. All expatriates or citizens of different race, should know their own weakness and acceptability in the main frame of society. If there is no acceptability and the society is not receptive, then, one should be careful, in protecting themselves.

Even in USA, the local citizens refuse to travel at night including taxi drivers, to certain locality, vulnerable to crime

    b. Yesterday I had seen in one of the English channel, the place where she was killed. She was alone walking at night which is completely secluded and she has been advised not to walk, travel alone at night near and around Park Parade.

Prevention is better than cure and life is one time.

I do condemn this murder and the murderers should be dealt with severe punishment.

Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved members of the family.May her soul rest in peace.

Also people that comment about the safety in Australia should 1st consider the safety in their own country. I agree that there is racial discrimination in Australia but there is discrimination in every country. In India for example people kill each other in terms of religion. So is India safe? will you go and tell people not to live in India because there are fights against religion? I don't think so, so why are you telling people not to visit or live in Australia? no country in the whole world is safe, that doesn't mean that there are no people living in any country. Use your common sense. the people that commented against Australia are most likely the once who discriminate against overseas people themselves. grow up guys, this is the 21st century, anything can happen anywhere.

john pinto, Looks like Arabs are treating you with dignity where you are working alongside with an Arab and Whiteman who gets more than double payment for the work less than what you do. You don't have true religious freedom either. You talk about Australia and any western country for that matter where you get equality in everything. This incident is nothing to do with racism. Show me a place where there is no racism. Middle East where you presently live, Western countries, Singapore, Japan, India? You live in the North and you're treated as a Madrasi by Shiv sena and Marathis. Ask Jesudas or Kamal Hasan (both are immensely talented) for their experience of discrimination. In Mangalore we moan about Mallus/Bijapuris/ taking up our jobs. In Bangalore Kannadigas have problems with Tamilians. Ask yourself a question: Tomorrow if you're in India and you are working in a office with a colleague from UK< Dubai, and Sudan will you/society treat them treat them equally. Colour matters, religion matters and finally nationality matters. There is no place in this earth where you can say, no discrimination, you have to just live with it or else stick to your home town for life.

Australia is a beautiful country, with lovely friendly people, there might be few rat bags here & there who are drug addicts, cause crimes & murders, we request NSW police to do thorough investigation and catch the culprits.
We we have lived in Australia for so many years, its beautiful place to live. we welcome many Indians to migrate here, if they wish to live and start a new life.

Joseph, No place is safe in this world. Either Qatar, England, USA, Australia or India as well. We are reading problems everyday not because of racism it’s for money. Only the difference is if something happens to an Indian in India nobody cares. Whereas if it happens outside India, Indians eyes will open, media makes big heading to sell their stuff. Alwyn and Ashok have an opinion of a country that in a sad story such as this they have to bring it up. I am not sure why you hate India so much that you prefer a foreign country. End of the day buddy you are just another Indian for the rest of the world.

Coming back to the point here. It is tragic that Prabha became a victim and lost has life. She would have rather lost her life as a martyr if she were in the Indian army and died while serving. In this case the consulting company would be upset that they need to fill in the slot and ramp up a new candidate lest their contract gets shot down. It is sad that all these consulting companies send young girls and boys to such distant location without any security or insurance just because we have the curiosity to earn and travel and for the company you are just a headcount. This incident is clearly not racist but stabbed for money since that area is known notorious place and many Australians were stabbed. I lived in US too just like you and if anyone says there is racism US, I agree but don't take every Indian attacked or killed as racism. There are other reasons that crime is done for and the victim is Indian does not mean it is racism. I lived in UK and Singapore as well and I can say there is racism there too. I lived in India where there is discrimination too if you want to change the word. There is no place where you are treated fairly. It is up to you to live with it or just confine to your own city forever. You're living in US and do you say there is no racism and if there is why are you still living there? Does it mean that you live in USA, you hate India??

Nanda, your comment is very funny. Why do you prefer to live in a foreign country? First of all you have to ask that question for yourself. I do not see anything wrong with Ashok's comment since it is a constructive criticism, I cant see any hatred in those comment. Some points he raised is surely a food for thought like the complaints from Mangaloreans about Mallus. People from South are discriminated in the North and people of North even do not know there are few states in the South, they just generalise by calling South Indians whereas we call them, Gujarathis, Biharis, Punjabis, Marathis, etc.. . The funny comment about head hunters and Army. You are in the US and you could have served in Indian army too. Just like you did youngsters do have dream of travelling and earing ..etc.. that doesn't mean they have to stabbed. We will wait for the reason for this stabbing and on prima face it doesn't look like racist but stabbed for money.

Santhosh, you need to read and understand before putting your opinion. Rita did not say that she is I India or asked why Indians should go abroad. It is John Pinto, who asked why people go to Australia as slaves where as he is himself a slave to the Arabs and he is asking people why you have to go abroad and India is our country. One should not throw stone to others when living in a glass house. It is high time for everyone to understand when you look at the comments from Indians living in Australia and Indians who live in the middle east. I do not understand why people who live in Middle east think that they are in paradise and branding others as slaves when they live in more civilised countries with more transparency than Arab countries.

The difference is we consider the victim as Indian and not based on her caste. That's peace and tolerance.

Heartbreaking incident and shocking , May her soul rest in peace . This is not an issue of racism probably expatriates are the easy victims of these kind of rare incidents and the main reason will be robbery or may be effect of drugs and alcohol . Still Australia is safe I believe.Humans are not safe in any part of this world anyway.

Yes, it is pretty easy to sit in Kuwait and comment like this.. and these are people who in their anger towards Modi and RSS, worry about "India's daughters" and support BBC!... God forbid something happens to them, they will beg the government, to get them back to their homeland.. "Modi IRaq nurse ke liye kuch karta kyun nahi"...!! the way they see victim name and if it is communal name, "oh what you doing in islamic and christian country"? and when majority if they say, Ok, so is this Hindu country you mean... pat comes reply, "WE ARE SECULAR< have u read constituipn"! disgusting..! rest in pace girl.. you were one amongst us.. racist, rowdy elements, just got you killed! thats the fact!

Australia has always been a racist country. In the past too there have been several incidents of Indians being victims of racial attacks. The Government of India is not taking firm bold steps to counter attack this menace. Indians should be discouraged from visiting Australia

Joseph, Doha, Qatar said: Australia has always been a racist country. In the past too there have been several incidents of Indians being victims of racial attacks. Looks like you did not read the story in full. That park she was walking at that time of the night is dangerous for anyone, I mean men or women, Australians or outsiders. It is the park where drug addicts/drug dealers run their business under the carpet of darkness. As it is mentioned here she was warned of these things beforehand. You cant colour every incident with racism. First of all most of the time when someone is attacked in outside their country, it is only one side will be published and media will even make it look worst than it is. You may not know this but an Indian of Punjab origin poured petrol to his car and set it ablaze and make a drama that few white people stopped him and put fire to his car. Insurance companies finally were able to crack the code. There are people who want to make dramas and everything is looked from a different angle. Same thing happens in India most of the time. A person had a problem with another guy and beat him. That was nothing to do with the community but just because they belong to 2 different communities, media would sell the story differently and we see communal avoidance. Grow up mate..read and understand the story...

Please don't say AUstralia is racist just you have nothing good to say about that nation. If it's racist ask Indians not to go there in search of job or obtain citizenship. I find iNdia is more racist then any other places in the world because human still treated as untouchable, religious bias, employment bias on employment in govt you name few racism in India that is why most of us left India and working overseas and doing much better that living in a isolated discriminated culture in our own India,we don't recognize the attacks on our places of worship, any more more going on. Same token I am sad to see such act of killing this women which is not acceptable for any ways, sure Australian govt will this matter without bias or racist ways where western govt respect all fair treatment to all

Joseph, you are right. There are enough Indians already there (watch during the cricket match though only 50% Indians might be coming to the grounds). No point of filling that place with Indians and once there are more Indians then there will be more death and more headlines in the media " an Indian died in Australia" Even Australians are stabbed for money by drug addicts.

@Joseph Qatar,I think you either not read the Report properly or didnt undrestand.she was not there to enjoy but sent from her Company and wanted to come back in April.second she was Walking through park which is and was always famous for drug peddlers and do anything for a Pound or Dollar.probably someone asked some Money and she didnt react ,was on phone,so he/she stabbed her out of Anger. It is really pity you are not piting her but jump to the conclusion of racist.Tell me are Indians not same?racist are everywhere. In india also kill People as though not worth of human life.we go abroad (you too)to work for our livlihood, whereever the Chance is.May her Soul rest in Peace and heartfelt sympathy to her Family.
