Tipu Sultan's arms collection sold for over 6 million pounds

New Delhi, Apr 23 (PTI): A collection of arms and armour once owned by Tipu Sultan, was sold for a total of over 6 million pounds in a London auction by Bonhams.

The 30 items in the 'Bonhams Islamic and Indian Art Sale' held on April 21 come from a single collection.

The top lot was a rare gem-set sword with tiger's head pommel from Tipu Sultan's royal regalia went under the hammer for 2,154,500 pounds. It was estimated at to fetch between 60,000 pounds to 80,000 pounds.

Tipu Sultan, the last king of Mysore adorned both objects of art and instruments of war with images of the tiger and with the tiger-stripe design, earning the nickname of "Tiger of Mysore".

A three-pounder cannon with field carriage sold for 1,426,500 pounds against an estimate of 40,000 pounds to 60,000 pounds and a two shot flintlock sporting gun from Tipu Sultan's personal armoury was sold for 722,500 pounds. It had been estimated at 100,000 pounds to 150,000 pounds.

"Bonhams is absolutely delighted with the outcome of the sale," Claire Penhallurick said in a statement.

"We were fielding bids from all around the world. Clearly connoisseurs recognised that these treasures from Tipu's armoury are astonishing works of art - and they were prepared to do what it took to acquire them" Penhallurick said.

The collection, which was exhibited and published, featured sabres, gem-set trophy swords, embroidered arrow quivers, exquisite quilted helmets, blunderbusses, fowling pieces, sporting guns, pistols, and a three-pounder bronze cannon.

The Islamic and Indian sale as a whole achieved 7.4 million pounds, auctioneers said.

Please everyone should know that in 17 th century there was no word like independence. The some part of India was under British control, and some parts with Nijam's,Marata's Mysore Rulers, and many small and big rulers. There was independence only for them .We can acknowledge that Hyder ali and Tippu Sultan fought many wars and they were brave people. But i dont agree they have done anything to free the people. Who ever go against their interest were punished under their rule. Indeed Tippu was a Muslim and he want to convert everyone in his jurisdiction to Muslim by whatever the way. He attacked Kerala only for expansion purpose and killed and tortured Hindus over there, demolished Temples and converted in Masses. There was no intention in his mind to fight against British in kerala.British came into War front only after King of Travankore made treaty with British. He only helped sringeri and other temples only after he started retreating in battle against combined forces from British and Trivankore armies. He's only intention was to get Majority Hindus during his final wars.We should have enough maturity to see the historical event without any biased view and accept the truth.

Tippu Sultan was a great king and ruler and fought against the British as his kingdom at that time was his country.
The Christians are upset because there was an incident with them and Tippu and find a reason to cry perscecution. If you read the archives, this act was to spite the Christians who were assumed to be aligned with the foreigners, which even now we see that they are anti Indian when it comes to religion.
The coorgs were actually hurt the most. There is an incident where he had so many of them beheaded and kept for display that people were surprised that such able bodied people existed. But we don't see Coorgs crying and that is because they are warriors and if their brothers died for coorg so be it as it was an act of war.

How about Vasco de Gama killing the Goa Brahamins who defied conversion?. I know it is out of context but do we forget that like how we should forget the crusades.?. If we should, then we can we simply appreciate Tippu as a ruler and forget about him kicking a few Christian butts.

Tipu Sultan was a noble and gentle muslim king just like Aurangzeb. Both wanted to bring peace and prosperity, but the hindus did not like it because it destroys their caste system.

    dude,

no invader leaves the invaded land by himself.every invader invades to loot.british never thought of leaving the invaded land specially india.after ww2 britain became so weak and they did not had the power to keep all thier invaded land.

subhash chandra bose became thier mainn head ache with his indian national army of 2 lakh soldiers and had its own airfiorce and was was globe trotting and meeting adolf hitler, then mighty japan and russia for military assistance and they were favourable to him.

inside india, lot of revoltionary leaders like bhagat sing, bikram bose, chandrashekar azad, sukhguru were denting and bleeding british by bombimg courts, killing high ranking military officers, looting trains by thier guerilla tactics.

resentment was growing within the indians in british royal indian army and they were starting to revolt and the result was royal indian navy mutiny 1946.right after one year they left india as they knew if the army itself had revolted against them then there is no future in india for them.

in the end british wanted to save thier face and wanted to show the world that they left india on thier own rather than being kicked on thier butt to leave.so diplomatically, a face saving arrangement was made by keeping figure heads like gandhi, nehru etc and to show to world that they went on thier own.if any invader want to go on thier own, they would not have stayed in a country for 300 years
    looting it.
indians are not dumb to believe this childrens bedtime stories as they are educated and travelled all arround the world and think rationally.
i have conversed with current generation britains also.almost all of them agreed with this.
the info you have given are all part of the face saving gestures.
info you given is not important.what led to that action is important.

Tippu Sultan is one of the great King who defeated British on several occasions including that worst defeat of British East India company to date in India hat ended in Treaty of Mangalore in 1784. Hyder Ali is the most underestimated King who became a King from his talent and he is the only King who actually defeated British decisively in a total war which ended in Treaty of Madras(1769) Hyder Ali should have given more coverage than Tippu because he was more talented than his son and established the Kingdom of Mysore and actually defeated British.

    plz research in google about

    "royal indian naval mutiny 1946".

thats the main reason british left india.otherwise they would have ruled us even today.when the army itself revolted against them they panicked and packed thier bags from india.other stories like they left due to non violence etc are all trash.
