Family declines groom's demand - marries girl off to another boy

Daijiworld Media Network - Mandya (SP)

Mandya, Jun 1: In an incident which occurred at Pandavapura in the district on Sunday May 31, parents of the bride, frustrated at the unreasonable dowry demand made by the groom, banished him and married the girl off to the son of her maternal uncle.

A girl from Tirumalapura in the taluk was engaged to be married to a youth from Hebbal Extension in Mysuru seven months back. The marriage was proposed to be held at the community hall by the side of Kennalu Gate near Pandavapura on Sunday. Reception had also been arranged on Saturday, which was well-attended.

Just before 10.30 am on Sunday that was fixed for tying the nuptial knot arrived, the boy demanded payment of dowry amount before he could proceed. Even though Rs 50,000 was immediately paid, he demanded for more. He behaved indecently, and said he would not marry the girl unless more money was paid. Parents of the girl then refused to give in to his demand, and asked the groom and his parents to give back ornaments and cash already collected by them. They said they are now convinced by the rude behaviour of the boy that he will not look after their daughter properly after marriage. When they refused to give back ornaments, gifts and cash, the relatives of the bride beat them up and handed them to police. In the police station, elders from both the sides entered into a compromise.

In the meanwhile, marriage of the girl was conducted with C Krishna, son of her maternal uncle. The groom not only failed to get the dowry he had demanded, but also the bride as a result.

This reminds me the marriage scene from Hindi movie 'Lajja'. In the movie father of the groom keeps telling his son 'Bete Atul, ut jao' as his demands could not be met by poor bride's father. Bride observes for some time and then burst into anger and shouts to everyone from groom side. She shouts 'tum logo ne jo pehana hai suite, boot, baniyan chaddi tak mere papa ke paise se hain'.

This is a good move by the girl's parents. Appreciate.

Dowry is a curse and is very rampant in our community, specially.

I have seen some parents, when their daughter's wedding turn comes, they would talk all religious taboos against giving or taking dowry. However, the same parents, when their son's turn comes, they start looking for brides from none but rich and affluent families, apparently in anticipation of resources. This is the truth, and I have witnessed such three families.

A couple of year back a forum was formed in the name of YAD (Youth Against Dowry)in Mangalore. Today it is vanished.

Preaching is easy but in practical terms, not easy for finding a compatible match abolish this system unless government impose more stricter measures against this menace.

Shame on those men who accept or demand dowry.

there are many in my community who says I won't ask dowry but they choose a rich family with a intention to get more dowry without demand... then he will keep saying I did not ask dowry and trying to become fake hero.. shame on these kind of all men.

Kudos to the brave bride and indeed congrats to the parents of the bride in tacking a strategic decision on the spur of the moment. The groom does not deserve to marry the young lady. There is a limit to greed for money.

Hope the new alliance will be fruitful and that the bride and groom will be happy.

It should be made like a deal, where in the bride pays the dowry to the groom and groom stays in the girls house and takes the adjustment or rather harassment or vice versa, I think the Arab world is better where the groom pays the bride.

    Well wisher,

''Arab world is better where the groom pays the bride.''

Actually it does not make anything better because many women are left unmarried because men cant afford dowry. Some end up taking loans for dowry and marriage expenses, which later cripples them with huge debt.

Parents are biggest support..If only every parent dared to protect their daughters this way and say no to Dowry.. the world would have been a better place.. Good job done! Infact instead Men shd pay dowry for taking away the daughter who the parents brought up from birth to being a ready bride !!
