Mangalore: Vittal Principal Prof Venkataraman Bhat (53) Passes away

Mangalore, Apr 25: Prof Venkataraman Bhat Balla (53), serving as principal in the Government First-grade College, passed away following a heart attack at his residence in Kaudichar in Puttur taluk on the night of April 23.

He had begun his working career as a journalist with Deccan Times along with renowned scribe P Gopalakrishna ("Pa Go"). In 1984, he joined as English lecturer at the Government First-grade College at Uppinangady. He served as English lecturer for 23 years in government colleges at Uppiangady, Hebri and Vittal. He was a member of the academic council of Mangalore University for a term.

Serving at Vittal college as English professor since 1998, later he was promoted to the principal's position. It was during his tenure as principal and because of his best efforts that in 2005 the Government College of Vittal won the B ranking from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

Journalism was his prime field of interest and a good number of his write-ups have appeared in different newspapers and periodicals. He had been credited with moulding a few journalists.

Prof Bhat is survived by his aged father, wife, a son and a daughter.
