Mumbai, Jun 8: Hoardings — they pollute the skyline and are growing at a rate that rivals the country’s population growth. However, all this would soon change, as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is planning to issue new guidelines for hoardings in the city.

The BMC has said no new permission for hoardings will be given while the new guidelines are taking shape.

“Hoardings damage the skyline and are also not in consonance with the city’s heritage and other structures,” said Additional Municipal Commissioner R A Rajeev who is spearheading the new hoarding guidelines.

While the new policy will take at least a month, according to the broad outlines, there would be restriction on the number of hoardings in a particular area. Permission for a hoarding would also depend on the type of road or street where a hoarding is sought to be put.

The BMC is also contemplating restricting the size of gargantuan hoardings that are currently being put up in the city.
