Karkala, Aug 19: Activists of Hindu organizations from Karkala and Kinnigoli raided a spot in Sankalakariya within Mundkoor gram panchayat in the taluk, and rescued 31 buffaloes which were found tethered there. They also transported these cattle with the help of the rural police station staff here, to the cattle shelter at Neelavara in Udupi taluk. The incident occurred on Tuesday August 18. It is believed that this spot was used by a person named Ibrahim to stock the cattle and transport them to Kerala for butchering.
Ibrahim has been involved with cattle trade since many years. Activists of Hindu Jagran Vedike and Bajrang Dal, who got information that Ibrahim has been supplying buffaloes to different slaughterhouses in Kerala after pooling together animals from various places at Sankalakariya, raided the den. The activists in large numbers, who were led by their leaders, then informed rural police station here. Station house officer, Mahadeva Shetty, visited the spot and said that the cattle would be sent to the cattle shelter at Neelavara with the help of Hindu organizations once the court passes an order to that affect.
The police personnel said that a case would be registered against Ibrahim and Illyas, who were found to be running a cattle trafficking racket.
Even as the den at Sankalakariya was being raided, the Panambur police, who came to know that cattle were loaded in an inhuman manner in a truck that was being driven towards Kerala, stopped the truck near Mangalore Chemicals and Fertilizers factory at Panambur, and rescued 20 buffaloes. They arrested Hammabba (48) from Mulky and Ibrahim (24) from Bantwal, while truck driver, identified as Sinaz, succeeded in fleeing. The policemen came to know that these cattle were dispatched from the above den at Sankalakariya. The police found that the buffaloes were stuffed into the truck in such a way that caused undue sufferings for them. Moreover, the persons in the truck did not possess certificates issued by veterinary doctors as per law. Therefore, they were booked under different provisions of The Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter, and Cattle Preservation Act.
With the specific objective of hoodwinking police personnel and those manning check posts, the roof cover of the carriage of the truck in question was found to be curvy with plastic sheet having been spread over it. Inside it, 20 animals were found loaded close to each other in a suffocating atmosphere. The truck, it is believed, was made to look like a vehicle which is used to transport onion and tobacco to ensure safe passage.
District convener of Bajrang Dal, Sunil K R, taluk assistant convener, Guruprasad Shetty, former president of Bailoor panchayat, Suresh Salian, and many others led the raid at Sankalakariya.
