New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS): Amid uncertainty once again over the NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan, the Congress on Friday said there was "no focus or stability" in the central government's policy towards the western neighbour.

"There is no focus, no consistency in Modi government's policy," Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi told reporters here.

Singhvi said the government should finalise its stance on the issue after due deliberations and display consistency thereafter.

Referring to a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Pakistan counterpart Nawaz Sharif in the Russian city of Ufa in July where it was decided to hold talks between the National Security Advisors (NSAs) of the two countries, Singhvi asked if proper groundwork had been done for the meeting.

He said the foreign secretary-level talks between the two countries were called off by the government in August last year after Pakistan High Commissioner Abdul Basit met Kashmiri separatist leaders.

"The same Hurriyat is now (again) eager to talk to the Pakistan high commissioner," Singhvi said.

The Congress leader said the NSA-level talks were being held in the aftermath of a series of ceasefire violations by Pakistan and terror attacks in Gurdaspur district of Punjab and Udhampur in Jammu and Kashmir.

Uncertainty continued over the NSA-level talks between India and Pakistan as New Delhi said on Friday that though it wanted the parleys to be held as scheduled, it was awaiting Islamabad's response to its advisory asking Pakistani NSA Sartaj Aziz not to meet Kashmiri separatists ahead of the August 23-24 meeting of the two NSAs.
