Udupi, Aug 29: A woman from Kundapur taluk has been ordered to be put behind bars for three years for senselessly killing her daughter-in-law. Chandravathi, wife of Nagappa Acharya from Muguli in Shiroor village in Kundapur taluk was found guilty of the above crime and handed down sentence.
As per the charge sheet filed by the prosecution, Chandravathi had got involved with exchange of heated words relating to wearing a sari with her daughter-in-law, Nagaratna, near the place inside the house where a sewing machine was located. In a fit of rage, she reportedly picked up the heavy scissors used to cut clothes and pierced the left side of Nagaratna's neck. Nagaratna, who was bleeding profusely, ran out of her house, collapsed in the courtyard, and died of severe bleeding. A case had been filed in the local police station about this incident.
Nagaratna had married seven years ago, and had three children. Immediately after the murder at 9.15 am on May 19, 2014,, a case was filed in Byndoor police station, and Chandravathi had been arrested.
Judge of the district and sessions court, Rajshekhar V Patil, who conducted the hearing, and examined brother of Nagaratna, Raghavendra Acharya, and other supporting evidences, held Chandravati guilty of the charges levelled against her. He handed down sentence by way of three years imprisonment. The judgment was delivered on Thursday August 27.
The court took the view that the said act could not be treated as an act of deliberate murder.
Public prosecutor from Mangaluru, M V Bhattappanne, and chief public prosecutor, Pushparaj K, along with public prosecutor of Kundapur, Srinivas Hegde, had represented the prosecution in the case and placed their arguments.
The then assistant superintendent of police, Radhika G had investigated the case and filed charge sheet in the court.
